Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced & easy to use vegetable steamer? I've been buying frozen veggies but fresh ones seem so much better...

Thank you!

I use an insert that fits into one of my stainless steel pots. Just a little tray type thing that fits in the top part... have had it for years. I'm sure you can find inexpensive ones. Have no idea how much I paid for it. But it's a necessary item for me! I use it for fresh or frozen broccoli most often. But you can steam anything in it.

Agree, this works the best! If you want a steamer look in stores for double pot glass top makes it more simple DO NOT buy a special steamer zapper whatcumacallit gadget!

I bought a Rice/veg Steamer a couple yrs. ago at WalMart (I worked there) and it is for the Microwave. I never used it until my husband mentioned how more healthy it would be to steam our veggies. I know it wasn't expensive!! I don't think they sell the same brand but I'm sure they sell something. It has a tray to insert for veggies and it's removable for rice. I really LOVE it. I don't know what took me so long to use it. I had it in a cupboard above the stove. I use it everyday now.
    Good Luck.

I love the stainless steel kind that has the basket that fits inside and sits on the stovetop. I got mine at Walmart...I think it was 20 or 25 dollars but that was several years ago. I have a rice/veggie steamer that is electric, and it works well for rice but I don't care forf it for the veggies and it's so much harder to clean and get out and plug in so I don't use it very often for rice. However, one advantage is that you can put the stuff in there and forget it and not have to worry about it burning. I do cook rice in htere when I'm doing something that I don't need to keep running back to the stove for......
  • Thanks for the feedback! I may be stopping in Walmart soon to see what they have.

I bought this one back in Feb of this year and it is amazing... I use it for tons of stuff, even making rice. http://www.amazon.com/Oster-5712-Electronic-6-Quart-Steamer/dp/B00019G8IS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1324859611&sr=8-2

I have the metal basket type that fits inside a saucepan on the stove. But the one I use the most is a Tupperware one that works in the microwave. Not sure if they are still made but I found one on ebay. I think they come in several sizes. I have the larger one but would like to have the smaller one also.

Sometimes I steam veggies in my rice cooker. It has a basket just for this purpose. I don't think it's the same as previously mentioned though, because mine is a stand alone appliance. It does not go in the microwave. I did get it at Walmart though.

I bought a cheapo Black & Decker YEARS ago (like 7-8 yrs) and have used it at least weekly. Works like a charm and was CHEAP!

If you aren't anti-microwave you can steam them in a microwave in a bowl with a plate on top. Just add about 1/4 c. of water at the bottom of the bowl and put it on for 2-3 minutes. I do this with broccoli at work with a bit of soy sauce on top and it's delish. Just drain the water from the bowl at the end.

I see it all the time at 2nd handed store (Goodwill, etc) for less than $5.
