What types of HIT/HIIT (High Intensity Training/High Intensity Interval Training do you do? Which training techniques have you found fit you the best? How often do you do HIT/HIIT?

Do you feel that incorporating the above mentioned training helps to enhance your physique in a positive way?

HIIT is incorporated in most Turbo Fire routines. After a few weeks of Turbofiring my weigh has diminished somewhat and I feel a lot more fit, could be HIIT related....
  • Some people I know have concerns of utilizing this type of training. Especially those who are worried about losing muscle mass.

Why would HIIT cause muscle loss? I've never heard that concern. Most of the experts I've read in books, articles and blogs state concerns about steady-state cardio, not HIIT.

This is what I've read as well...

I do HIIT (Insanity) 3 days a week and 3 days I do strength training (P90X). I can't really comment on loss of muscle mass as I really didn't have much to begin with

By the way, I looked at your profile and now I have a goal for the weight I want to be. See, I was trying to figure out a goal weight, I didn't want to lose to much weight. Since we're the same height my goal is to be your current weight. Thanks.

That's my concern at the moment. As of today, all HIIT and heavy cardio has been removed from my routine. I'm now incorporating 40-60 minutes of brisk walking at the end of each workout instead and upped my protein consumption.

I don't want all of my hard work at the gym to be a complete waste for my goals!

*Edit* I meant to include that HIIT is more a benefit to strength and fat loss
  • What types of HIT/HIIT (High Intensity Training/High Intensity Interval Training do you do? I use HIIT with the Elliptical and Running/jogging/walking............ Which training techniques have you found fit you the best? i do 30 secs High Intensity.. then 20 seconds mid way and then 30 seconds low... and so on.. How often do you do HIT/HIIT? 3 to 5 times a week..

Do you feel that incorporating the above mentioned training helps to enhance your physique in a positive way? Yes.. i have lost loads of Body fat. I never experienced losing muscles.. I thought that was the idea BEHIND HIIT .. you dont run as high a risk of losing muscle.

You definitely have a good routine going! Good to know that HIT/HIIT doesnt affect muscle lost... Ive only read on bodybuilding.com that there are some expressed concerns of this happening...not necessarily that it does happen. Thanks again!!!

Thanks for ur comment. Question: Why did you remove HIIT and heavy cardio from your routine if you know that HIIT is more a benefit to strength and fat loss?

I can only say what is working for me. Since I've added HIIT and occasional Tabata workouts, I'm losing inches faster, seem to be revving up my metabolism so I can eat more and still lose, and my muscles are getting stronger and harder. I do HIIT a lot of different ways: treadmill, elliptical, bike (exercise or real), on my rebounder, at the track or on the trail, whatever. Usually 60s hard, 60s slow.

2 times a week: Tababta Protocol. I'll either do sprints or elliptical on the highest resistance.

Only competitive bodybuilders are concerned with that. Even then it would be minimal. IMO that competitive bodybuilders just despise doing any cardio at all and use this as an excuse not to do it even it if is short.

I have never read about HIIT causing a loss of muscle, while I have read many times about the potential danger of losing muscle mass with long duration steady state cardio. HIIT 2-3 times a week will work well along with a weight program. I personally use Turbulence Training which incorporates intervals as part of its protocol.

As one poster above noted, I also have found when I incorporated HIIT into my routine I found inches coming off much more noticeably than when I just did cardio with some strength training.
  • I have just started doing an HIIT routine yesterday. I am doing 30 seconds full sprint, followed by 30 seconds walking, for 6 cycles (6 minutes). My plan is to do the HIIT routine everyday, and strength training every other day. Is it too much to do HIIT every day?

YES that is way too much. Everything I have read has said you never want to do HIIT 2 days in a row because you won't allow your body to recover. That would be 3x a week max. If you're doing it right, you won't be able to do it every day anyways.

I do HIIT on the elliptical for 15 minutes after my weight lifting sessions, 2x a week. 5 cycles of 0:30 sprint and 2:00 rest.

Correct. 3x a week max (especially if you are doing HIIT right and going all out) is max because of the load on the nervous system.
