Best shoes for walking in/on snow?

Hi Guys. I normally make excuses not to walk outside in winter because we always have snow on the roads. We don't get plowed enough for them to completely clear the roads like in town. I have some excellent snow boots but I find them really heavy. Soon, come January we will have several feet of snow and I would end up sinking down. So I know there are snow shoes out there for shoeing. But what if you just want to walk on the snow for exercise? Also, right now the only shoes that don't hurt my feet due to stress fractures are sketchers so I need something with good support for that and for my back. Any suggestions are helpful! Thanks!

My other option is to drive into town and walk but that is a lot of gas.

Bump. Thanks for asking this question! I want to do the same thing. I did some online searching and found a few things, but I have no idea if they work or are durable. I'd love to hear from other winter walkers as to what works for them.

I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure if you want to walk on several feet of snow, snowshoes are the only type of shoe that will work.

You can buy elastic treads that go over the soles of your shoes. I forget what they are called. They add a little traction on the snow and ice.

I don't know if you're walking through a snowfield or just unplowed streets, but when I live in Minnesota I loved crocs. Well, I still do, but they are durable and cushioned and great for all-weather. Not the crocs with holes in them, but the sealed up ones or even the boots. They are much more lightweight than boots and the bottoms are slip-proof because they were made to be worn while boating. If you order them a size up you can wear double thick socks when it gets cold, or they have some models now that are insulated. Check out crocs.com.

    Yak trak!!!

Yaktrax...I'll have to take a trip to Sports Authority or somewhere else that carries these and check them out. I might have to pick up a pair for my mom. She just had back surgery this year and is worried about the snow/ice in her inclined driveway. Sounds like a good option for her. Thanks! =)

My boyfriend bought them for his Mom for Christmas. It was totally just for her to be able to walk on the snow/ice with confidence.
