After an X-ray, PT, and MRI, and more PT, i was told i need a lateral release surgery. Now i work retail, on my feet on concrete floor, bending, kneeling and squatting 40 hours a week, so im worried about this. Also, if anyone has had it, how is it, and how is the recovery, and when did you get to go back to work/normal exercise routine, etc?? Any info will be helpful as i have never had surgery and am kind of nervous.

My son had it when he was 16-no further problems. My sister has had it just about every 5 years, which is not all that uncommon. They were both up and walking the same day, using a brace but no crutches. Of course they are crazy, but they were doing it!

And both of them said the relief they got from it was wonderful. There was a fairly short recover (2 weeks maybe?) and some physical therapy (my sister doesn't even do that anymore-she knows the exercises!). In short, any surgery is nerve wracking, but you will be glad you did it!
  • Nikki - I haven't had any surgeries other than my c-sections, and I helped Richy through the recovery for both of his work comp surgeries.... The big thing with surgery is people tend to freak themselves out over it and imagine the worse... it's always a pleasant surprise when it's nothing even close to what was imagined, but it makes for a horrible time of anticipation! Don't psych yourself up and you'll be okay... and remember, I'm always just a phone call away!
  • Hiya...my daughter had it at age 19...soccer injury. Pretty big scar on her knee cap and she never fully recovered. Some arthritis. She's 31 now. She is on her feet a lot and seems to do ok, but when she runs, it sometimes aches. From what I know about lat releases, you don't have a lot of choice, and should shop around for the best orthopod who does JUST knees and maybe specializes in lat releases. And be religious about your physical therapy afterwards, which is not a walk in the park. Happy New Year.

I am dying to get back into exercising but at this point, i cant do much more than work, so as soon as i can start getting my workouts in i will be happy, so the physical therapy will be no problem!! I have read good and bad about the lat release and im over the initial shock, now i am anticipating it! Thanks for everyones input!
