Runners: frequency of speed workouts?

I’m working on a better 5k time. I run 3 times per week. How often should I be doing sprints, tempos, long runs, hills etc? Seems like a lot of different run workouts to fit in…

I was thinking about a weekly schedule of: #1- long run (6miles), #2- sprints/intervals, #3- 5k and pushing my pace. Does this sound like a good plan, or no? I just feel kinda lost with too many options haha.

    check out halhigdon.com there are some advanced 5k training plans there....also other plans online with speed interval programs.
