Any food suggestions for someone with gastroparesis, struggling to get any solids in without being in a lot of pain. Only managing small amounts of fluids at a time so looking for suggestions. Am supposed to be gluten and dairy free so please keep that in mind :) Thanks :)

  • All right, so what you're looking for is a low fat, low fiber, gluten-free, dairy/lactose free diet, right?(I know it's low fat, because fat takes longer to be digested as does fiber). Which means you can eat a high protein diet.

Here's an idea of what that'd be like:

    Breakfast (Omelet)
    2 Eggs (or egg whites)
    1/4 c Mushrooms (diced)
    1/2 Tomato (diced)
    1/2 Pepper (any color)
    - Let cook for two minutes, flip (1 min).
    2 slices Turkey Bacon

    Lunch
    Vegetable Soup
Turkey Sandwich - 2 slices deli + Ezekiel bread (brown rice bread) + light mayo (olive oil) + Tomato. NO lettuce (high fiber and it'll hurt your stomach) You can sprinkle some black pepper over the mayo for taste.

Alt Lunch: Rice crackers with tuna (1 can tuna + shredded carrots + green onion + light mayo + lemon juice)

Dinner: 1 lean protein with 1/2 c. Spinach + brown rice.

Snacks: Rice chips, fruit cocktail, protein shake with almond or coconut milk.

Rule of thumb here would be to chew everything fully. If I were you I'd stick to lots of pureed foods (mashed sweet potatoes [made with soy milk]) and avoid apples, celery, lettuce and all high fiber cereals.

Most lunches can be soups with sandwiches. There are tons of soups out there: tomato basil, lentil, mushroom, asparagus, leek, etc. Substitute milk with soy milk.

Also, take a browse through gluten free sections @ your local grocer. There are some gluten free cereals you may be able to eat as well as many rice options.

You're a trooper! All the best.

You should try livingwellwithcrystal.com. She has a lot of good advice as well as a cookbook. Also, g-pact.org.

These suggestions are good, but I would avoid the carrots unless cooked, and onions/peppers are very rough to digest. High protein seems to work but watch out for constipation- which is probably an issue anyway. You'll know if you start to look 9 months pregnant after eating, if something wasn't a good choice. livingwellwithcrystal.com is wonderful! There are facebook groups for those of us living with GP. Good luck!
