Fitness and New Years Resolutions

It never fails, every year I see an increase in crowds flocking to my gym. Don't get suckered into a long term commitment unless you are serious about getting in shape. Gym owners don't care if you're serious or not.

Yeah, that's why I pay 19/mo and go about 5 times a year....but I'm not in a contract anymore...what am I doing? Anyway, I love the outdoors so that's probably why.

I go to the gym about 4 to 5 times a week on average. Its been that way for the better part of 4 years now. I made a commitment and stuck to it.

Yeah, I made my commitments outside the gym. I do my runs on tracks or hills and circuits at home. For a time, I used to go 5/days a week but that was years back when my dad did not think I was old enough to runs in the hills alone.

As long as you are getting your cardio. It sucks that you're paying for a membership you don't use though.

I am committed and addicted, But I have the Best of 2 worlds because I have My Very own Gym here at home.. No Memebership fee, Just Jump on and do a lil as often and when ever I want.. Yes it has cost a pretty penny when I set up my inhome gym earlier in the year but after losing 158lbs this year, I will say it has truly been worth every singe Pretty Penny:wink:

I've had a membership to bally's for almost 20 years, and it only costs me about 120 bucks to renew for an entire year, so I do it reguardless of how often I go.

I have an elliptical at home that i use most of the time, I ride my bicycle for long distances most weekends, and I'm trying to take up running, but every once in a while, on rainy weekends when cycling and outdoorsy things are out, I like to go into the gym and use the ellipticals there and then the dry sauna afterwards.

G*d damn Carolinamomma3! That's a home gym. Even if it cost a lot up front, in the long run, it could easily be cheaper than a gym, particularly if other people in you household use it.

If new years dieters make gym owners smile, people like my husband and I must make them cringe. We're consistently there, 5 days a week. I end up paying essentially two memberships for myself though, one for the regular gym, and one where I take dance classes (where I get classes, plus a few hours a week open practice time).

I'm starting to think I'm over-paying to use the gym at work ($20 a month per person). But it's convenient.

Wow. Very nicely done on the home gym.

I go to the gym only when the weather's bad enough that I don't want to bike or run outside. Luckily, there's a Planet Fitness between home and work, so it's easy to get in a workout there, and at $10 a month with no contract, it's plenty cheap. If I only go twice a month, it's cheaper than drop-in rates at the local rec center.

I'm completely DREADING what it's going to be like in there next week. Here's hoping for a warm January.

You're so right...SO many people will get all excited about losing weight in the New Year & they will sign up for a membership & then get over the excitement & never use it!!! I was talking to the manager at my gym about this yesterday. He said, "Just wait, it is going to be PACKED in here for the first 2 weeks of January. But then, after those couple weeks, they will all stop coming & it will be back to normal by February." & I said, "Yeah, well at least you will get their money!" hahaha.

I go to the gym 5 days a week. I attend 5-6 group classes each week, & use the weight machines & occasionally the elliptical/treadmill. My membership is $40/month, so it costs me about $2 each time I go. I'd say I'm getting my money's worth! :D

It's not only the gyms that are overun with newbies. There's a 5 mile trail beside our house which we do on weekends. First couple of weeks of January there's about 4 x the amount of people on it..come February they're gone.

One of the things I do like about January in the gym is I can try a new class of something I've never done before and not look like a complete idiot because there's tons of new people trying it for the first time too. January I usually just change up my gym hours if I want on equipment or definitely get to class very early to stake out a spot.

  • My husband and I are going to keep our eyes out for someone who is going to give up on their New Years Resolution so that we can grab some cheap gym equimpment when they don't want it any more! And I only go to the gym once a week for right now and it's Saturday morning around 8, so no one is there anyway. I like to get it done and over with for the day. I do hope to up the amout of times that I go to the gym a week but I also don't want to do to much at one time and not be sucessful!

I'm jealous! My home workout equipment consist of a step, 2 sets of dumbbells, resistance bands, a body bar, a stability ball and 15 acres of muddy land to run on.

Years ago, I realized that a monthly fee to the gym didn't guaruntee a healthy lifestyle. So, I didn't join again until I already had a proven track record of regular exercise. Now, I go to a 24/7 gym because it enables me to exercise after dark and keeps me from storing bulky equipment in my small home. I

yup, my thoughts exactly, we all have to start somewhere, feeling self conscious, awkward, and just wanting to succeed, it would be nice to have people encourage us rather than judge and belittle, but it takes all kinds.

I like the idea of watching Craigslist after the resolutions fail. :)

I think I will look for some good DVD sets and some more dumbbells.

You just gave me courage to go to some of the classes I see going on when I work out on the cardio and weight machines. I am going to go and blend in with the rest of the people who don't know what they are doing. Genius

As a year round gym goer I do get frustrated with the flood of New Year's Resolutionists! I don't want more competition for my favorite equipment... But, when I see someone who is dangerously overweight I just want to embrace and encourage them! It's so hard changing habits and I really wish that those folks would stay with it! I want them to feel proud and comfortable in THEIR gym! I feel so inspired when I see someone who is clearly uncomfortable but they are doing it anyway! We all have a starting point!

LOL at this topic because it's true. This week I've been on vacation so I've been going to the gym in the evening, and there's been a steady stream of folks taking tours and filling out applications at the front desk. I don't think the extra crowds will affect me because normally I go at 5 a.m. with the other diehards trying to get their pre-work sweat in. Best of luck to the newbies.
