100lbs in a year, too much?

I have a goal to lose 100 pounds this next calendar year. Is that goal unrealistic if I want to keep the weight off? I started logging again on 11/28/2011 and I have dropped almost 25 pounds since then.

Not at all, and would be healthy too imo. That comes out to a little less than 2 pounds a week.
  • Are you following the 1200 calorie diet? I think that you would be okay as long as you dont fall below your recommended calories. I say give it a try. If you find that losing 2 pounds a week is too much or u need to up your calories mfp lets you do that. Congrats on 25 pounds lost. That alone is a major deal : )

I lost 10 lbs a month for 10 months straight.....it was nice and steady, then it slowed down but still came off.

I think it is a doable and reasonable goal if you are heavy enough to begin with.

I'll probably be trying to lose 100 this year myself. Keeping it off means learning how to adjust to your goal weight (exercise/diet needs). I don't see anything wrong with it. Good luck and congrats on the first 25

I did that from Dec 2010 to Dec 2011. But I had a lot to lose and still have a ways to go. Like was said before, just don't go below 1200 or your body goes into starvation. Very easy to gain it back if you do that. Congrats on the 25, and good luck. Just stay true to logging and exercise and you will do it!

Well I would like to lose at least 184 pounds! So I definitely have the weight to lose! I am nervous! Yesterday I only ate 1126 calories! Hope my body doesn't go into starvation mode over that! I have already lostv 24.8 of the pounds I wish to lose!

There are lots of post here about starvation mode - Try the search function to find some reading - it's actually pretty rare for someone with a lot to lose to go into starvation mode - You will be fine if you occassionally go below 1200 calories. There is some great info on varying your calories (zig-zagging) that I've found really helpful.

Best evidence is that folks who lose it more slowly (drop 15%, then maintain for a few months) get less resistance as they get closer to goal weight. My doc told me that the folks he's seen KEEP it off for long periods tend to be those to who lose 10-15 lbs per YEAR.

But when you've got >100 lbs to lose, that just doesn't seem rational. I mean, really? A decade to finally reach the middle of my healthy BMI range? No thanks!

Do some research; you may find that eating more (closer to your BMR) works better for you; I've seen a LOT of stories of women eating 1200 lbs and hitting nasty plateaus. And dropping again when they bump calories up. Zig-zagging also seems to help.

That is UNREALISTIC! Its not impossible, but unrealistic! Set your goal to something you can easily achieve - for instance lose 10 pounds in 3 weeks. That should be very realistic and you may even lose 15 pounds. If you do - you will smash your goal and it will really motivate you! Set SMALL attinable goals!

The weight will drop off quickly at first, and then more slowly once you get the first 50-70 lbs gone. That's normal. I don't think you need to restrict your calories that radically, particularly if you're active and / or working out.

I wouldn't give yourself a number goal. It can be dispiriting if you end up not quite on target. But you'll certainly shift a lot of that weight in a year, yes.

Your body won't go into starvation mode after one day of going under... or even 3 or 4. If, week by week, you average in the vicinity of 1,200 calories (give or take 100 depending on your body) you'll be fine. It doesn't matter if you had 1,500 on monday and 900 tuesday... it averages out.

100lb in one year is not to much, be honest with yourself and keep on it. if you fall get back on as quick as you can. stay in the gym but move well every day. set smaller goals during the year. so 2 months 20lb or something. and then it will help stay forscued and will mean if you don't quite get to the mini goal you will not be far away and beable to make it up.

but most of all, learn from the experiences i.e learn how to eat and find and exercise that you know when you get to the goal weight you can still enjoy. set fittness goals as well and then you will have other things to work towards.

but most of all be kind to yourself if you have a mini goal of 20lb and you only loose 18lb relises what you have achieve.

last year I lost 59lb which average out at 1.4lb per week, I now have around 10lb left to loose which is taking longer but boy am I fit now and so I have fittness goals and am not worring to much if I don't lose the last little bits. only thing I regret is not taking more photos of myself so that I could see the difference. so be brave and take photos naked every month as a min!! great motivator trust me.

good luck you can do it if you want it bad enough. x x

I have a similar goal, I would like to weigh 100lbs less in March 2013, so that's a year and 3 months. I know that some months I will lose 10+ pounds, and maybe 4 pounds another. I had lost a lot of weight prior eating a 1000-1200 cal/day diet and of course hit a plateau, it completely ruined my weight loss and I went up from there, so this time around I am trying to stick close to a 1400-1500 calorie diet. But we are all different, best of luck to you.
