Maybe I need a FAQ, but how much does one plate weigh? I mean, one plate could be also a very big one plate :)

I would purchase a food scale and it will help you with the correct serving size of each food.

Like with food on it? Or just the plate?

Depends on the plate. A china plate is going to weigh more than a paper plate.

sorry I have not been clear, but when this site (used for the first time today) asks for the food I ate today, it asks also for the number of servings. Ok, but how much grams is a serving?

P.S.: your answers made me laugh guys :D

Every food is different. I found this site online-
    http://www.fitsugar.com/What-Serving-Sizes-Look-Like-762806
    http://startcooking.com/blog/333/Measurement-and-Conversion-Charts

How do I convert liquid measurements?

One teaspoon (tsp) = 5 milliliters.
One tablespoon (Tbsp) = 3 teaspoons = about 15 milliliters.
One fluid ounce (fl. oz.) = 2 tablespoons = 28 milliliters (often rounded up to 30 ml).
    One-half cup = 4 fluid ounces = 120 milliliters.
    One cup = 8 fluid ounces = 240 milliliters.
    One pint = 2 cups = 16 fluid ounces = 480 milliliters.
    One quart (qt) = 4 cups = 2 pints = 32 fluid ounces = 950 milliliters.

    One gallon = 4 quarts = 128 fluid ounces = 3.8 liters (L).
How do I convert weight measurements?
    One gram (g) = 1000 milligrams (mg).
One ounce (oz) = 28 grams.
One kilogram (kg) = 1000 grams = 2.2 pounds (lb).
    One pound = 16 ounces = 454 grams.

This is what a serving size of most foods looks like.

    Food One Serving Equals . . .
Breads, pasta, cereal, cooked grain, etc. One slice of bread (size of CD case)
Half a bagel (size of a hockey puck)
One-cup cereal (two hands cupped together)
Half-cup cooked grain or pasta (one cupped palm)

Fruits One piece of fruit (size of a tennis ball)
Half-cup cut-up fruit, raw, cooked, frozen, or canned (size of seven cotton balls)
    One-quarter cup dried fruit
Three quarters cup 100 percent fruit juice

Veggies Half cup cut up veggie, raw, cooked, frozen, or canned (looks like the bulb part of a lightbulb)
Half-cup cooked, canned or frozen legumes
    One-cup leafy greens
Three quarters cup 100 percent vegetable juice

Meat, chicken, or fish Three ounces (deck of cards or checkbook)
    One egg

Dairy One ounce of cheese (two nine-volt batteries)
Half-cup ice cream, cottage cheese, or pudding
    One-cup milk or yogurt

    Nuts One-third cup (small handful)
One serving of peanutbutter is 2 thumbs

thank you very much. Interesting way to measure servings. So is not any way to know how much is a plate of spaghetti in grams according this site?

You can know if you measure its volume with measuring cups, or its weight, if you have a food scale. You will find that most successful, veteran MFPers utilize a food scale and measuring cups with every meal they make. It helps us to accurately know what a serving is. My guess is that your plate of spaghetti has two or three servings, maybe even more. A serving of pasta is actually a lot smaller than most people think!

    Edit: spelling

yeah, that's what I think too. Mostly because I am Italian and we like pasta :). How do you measure spaghetti in a cup? :D

I think for a spaghetti bolognese a plate is more or less 80g of pasta + dressing.

For me it is 3-4 oz of meat of fish, and 2 cups of vegetables.

Buy a food scale that measures grams and ounces. I use mine everyday.

    "plate" is not a measurement.
Forget you ever heard that and any food measured by the plate, do NOT log that in. Find another source for calorie and nutritional content.

Pasta you would have to do by weight, there should be a serving size in the database for ozs. You cook a 16oz box, split that four equal ways, each person got a 4oz serving. Although with dry pasta that is pre-cooked weight (all your adding is water, so the nutrition doesn't change, but if you weighed after cooking it would be much heavier).

Different food have different ways to measure the servings, it's not all grams and cups. Most meats are going to be measured by ounces. My fish filets for example are preweighed 4oz fillets, so those are easy, but if they weren't I would weigh them and divide by 4oz since 4 oz is a "serving".

Believe it or not I use a digital postal scale (don't have a food scale yet) but it's pretty accurate (2 decimals on grams, 1 decimal on ounces) and it does both grams and ounces, so right now that works for me.

    This s an important question.
The serving size s listed as such. Then, you can list the number of servings (of that size), and you can also check the drop-down menu for other serving sizes. Sometimes, they are in grams, or, less usefully, by container.
Since the database is updated by users, there should be an option for the food you are looking for, that will suit your needs and customary use.
    Does this help?

yes problem is that it is easy to measure the pasta, but it is not easy to measure the dressing. should I weigh every single ingredient before to prepare a homemade ragu (bolognese + peas)?

Yes, and use the recipe tool to find out the nutitional info of all combined ingredients.

Yes, and use the recipe tool to find out the nutitional info of all combined ingredients.

The recipe tool also allows you to divide the recipe by the number of servings. This is an arbitrary number that you can select or change.
Good luck, and happy new year.

Did you go looking for a 7-year-old thread to bump up?

Database is user-sourced, so there are some weird entries. I find that if I type "USDA" after what I'm searching for, I get better results (e.g. Chickpeas, canned USDA).

My first thought was 45lbs, yes there are different sizes, but when someone talks about benching 2 plates, they mean 2 - 45 lb plates on each side. Lol

Also user-entered items, which is probably what you are seeing. But to echo above. Why resurrect a 7-year-old thread to get upset about measurements in the food database?

I actually enjoyed going back and reading the first page. It made me think of the old Jeff Foxworthy routine, “Here’s Your Sign” ...
