I was wondering if anyone else has this problem and what to do about it. If I eat a "heavy" meal like pasta or a 4 oz steak I show a 2 to 3 pound gain the next day. My calorie count stays between 1200 and 1400 per day. This weight gain does not go away with normal bowel movements. What is wrong?

Lots of calories...especially at night. Try tapering your calories throughout the day and you'll probably be fine...pasta makes me feel lazy anyway. And carbs hold a lot of water with them, hence the weight increase.

Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a queen, and dinner like a pauper....works for me! Just thinking about it logically, your body is like a fire. In the morning you need to get it going again, so you "break the fast" just as you would put a bunch of wood to start the fire. After that, you just need to add a little bit every now and again to keep it going.

    Hope this helps...

Are you measuring your pasta and is the steak lean? I dunno if it pertains to you or not but sometimes we see calories remaining and have too big of a portion just because it falls in our calorie range...I tend to stick with chicken.fish however if i eat steak i only eat 2-3oz of very lean meat....I dont eat pasta but when I used to I never measured and thats a big downfall with pasta...:drinker:

Sodium may be causing you to hold water. And then, too...you haven't eliminated the waste part of what you ate. :ohwell:

m--your explanation was so clear. that's a very useful way to look at meals. thanks!

also--meat takes longer to go thru digestion. and your bm's are a result of food 36 hrs before, i think i heard that somewhere.

Unless your pasta dish was around 12500 cals you can pretty much chalk it up to water:wink: Try eating foods that are diuretics-like asparagus.

It could just be sodium - especially if it was a restaurant meal. Give it a couple of days with good workouts & plenty of water. It'll go away.
  • I always try to stay away from pasta. It was always hard to measure and once I dropped it out of my diet things became a littler easier.

yep, in order to gain a "real" pound, you have to actually eat a real pound (or very close too it); actually quite a bit more then 1 lb because you burn a decent amount every day anyway. Otherwise, it's most likely water. This is one of the reasons why I don't like weighing yourself every day. If you can separate the scale from emotion, then fine, but if it bothers you that your weight fluctuates daily, then I would step away from the scale and only use it sparingly.
