Ideal Weight?

I'm not sure what my ideal weight should be. Last time I remember being happy with my body was at 14 when I was 55kgs. This was before 2 kids and I was obviously shorter! So I'm not sure what weight to shoot for.
I am currently 74kgs (started MFP at 86kgs) and I'm 160cms tall. I have been thinking 60kgs but I was 60kgs between my pregnancies and I was no where near thin. Advice?

I just picked a number in the healthy BMI range for my height. I found this calculator though, http://www.healthstatus.com/cgi-bin/calc/calculator.cgi
Says my healthy weight is 114 - 148 lbs (51 - 67kg) or 132lbs (60.28kg)0 -
Thanks, that says my ideal weight is about 57kgs. Still seems so far away!! lol0

Take it one day at a time. I recommend setting smaller goals at first.0 -
I just don't see the point in reaching smaller goals. There is no reward for getting half way there0

Your goal should really be a healthy body composition, rather than a scale number. Next time you go to the doc, get him/her to test & find out how much lean body mass you have (in other words, how much your bones, organs & muscles weigh, not counting any fat). That makes a big difference in your goal weight. I am tall, with a large frame and lots of muscle (underneath all the flab!
) My doc says that almost 150lb of my body is lean mass. So if I only lose fat & keep my lean muscle mass the same (which is the goal) I will be at my optimum healthy weight when I hit 180 or 175. But that is still in the "obese" category, according to the BMI chart.
BMI charts were never meant to be used to guide weight loss. And you're correct that shooting for your adolescent weight is also unrealistic. So, really, I would consult a health care professional. Or just listen to your body. Just get to the point where you can do all of the athletic things you want to do, and you feel healthy.
As for the smaller goals thing, for me it just helps to keep me on track. I have SO much to lose, 130 lb, and for me it's hard to tell that I'm making definite progress unless I break it up into smaller bits. I just divided my ultimate goal by number of months, and if I don't hit my monthly goal I know I need to work a little harder. But you should do whatever works best for you.
Good luck!0 -
I'm aiming for 60kg it's in middle of my healthy weight, no idea what your height is in cm, I'm 5ft 3 and half and it says my healthy range is between 8 st 7 and 10st 7 depending on whether small, medium or large boned.
I am 42 now though so don't think I'll look as good as I did in my 20's at a lighter weight. .. 55 kg doesn't allow for much healthy muscle!0 -
Nothing wrong with aiming for 60kgs and then re-evaluating!0

I agree with you on that! Per my BMI, I could weigh as little as 111 lbs. at 5'5" - ridiculous. I'm 48 and at 133, and that is about as low as I care to go! Working on healthy muscle is important, especially as we get older!0 -

You mean because you won't be thin? There is significant health improvement in losing just 5% of your body weight so certainly those smaller goals are still worth it. Of course, if your motivation is entirely superficial then I am thinking it is better to be a bit thinner than not thinner at all?0
