water with your meal (good or bad)

I went to a lunch time class on nutrion and the women said that it was not good for digestion to drink to much water with your meal as it effected the stomach acids from being able to digest the food. I am not sure what to think, as some say to drink water to fill up. Water for thought.

Water can act as an acid. Hydrochloric acid is a really strong acid, and your stomach will make as much as it needs to get everything digested. It will contract over and over and expel food into the small intestine to 'test' how digested the food is. If it's not digested enough, the stomach will keep working on it.0

That is interesting. So if I take Prilosec Otc most days, how is that affected since it slows down acid production?0
-
I had heard that but it seemed like you had to drink alot of water for it to be bad. Not just normal drinking.
I've also heard about not mixing certain foods. Like never eat watermelon with any other foods. In the summer I put it into salads and it is so yummy and refreshing.0 -

If you take Prilosec, it's (hopefully) because you have excess acid production. So that decreases it to a normal level.
Why wouldn't you mix watermelon with other foods?
The stomach is only one site of digestion. Hydrochloric acid is produced in response to any change in the stomach, even if you just eat a very small meal, because touch-receptors in your stomach will 'sense' it. Some things, like caffeine and histamines, will increase HCl production. Some things, like antacids, are bases that reduce acidity, but they don't stop HCl production. They just bring the pH back to a less aggravating level. The stomach just liquefies the foods and breaks big junks down into smaller molecules. Everything else 'important' happens in the intestines.0 -

SBS, I do eat watermelon with things. The friend that told me not to said it was because it would cause digestion to be messed up. They actually said all melons should not be eaten with any other foods. I also like cantalope or honeydew in salads. I can't wait till summer when there are more fresh fruits & vegetables!0

Should You Drink Water with Meals?
There exists some controversy as to whether it's healthy to drink water with meals. Oh I was just curious as to what the no-melon-mixing was based on. I like the sciency parts, but sometimes there aren't any, hehe. :flowerforyou:0 -

My theory is that water is your best friend at all times. Stay well hydrated and you will be on your way to better health!0

I think this is up there with eating at night...if you dont have any ill effects from doing it its probably fine.
I personally get a very sick feeling if I drink too much before or during a meal and it lasts for a while after I eat so I avoid drinking too much while eating. I thought that maybe it was how much I was eating but it seems to happen even with small snacks. If I have had lots of water I feel sick even with just a few bites of food. For me I have to be careful but if you have been drinking water with meals and feel fine I see no reason to stop.0 -
Okay, confession:blushing: I eat my watermelon and canteloupe with salt, my granny did it and I picked up the habit as a child0

This is my theory too!!!0 -
I agree, if you don't feel sick, don't stop.
Also, I just found out in my Nutrition class (It's so cool!!) that our stomach begins producing hydrochloric acid as soon as we see, smell, or even so much as THINK about food! It goes along with that "mouth-watering" effect. It's not just an expression: it actually happens!
And yes, antacid tablets are a base that help neutralize stomach acid, but once your body senses that your stomach's pH has shifted, it actually causes more acids to be released. So antacids are just a temporary fix for heartburn. :ohwell:0 -

Yup, the senses are incredible powerful. A visual stimulus in the form of an intense stressor will also inhibit HCl production and digestion as a whole. So maybe watching a SUPER scary movie will help decrease hunger? Or reduce heart burn? Hmmm, any volunteers?0
