So I've been looking at this healthy recipe book and tempeh keeps coming up as an ingredient. I looked on wikipedia and apparently it's a soy patty? Does anyone eat this? How does it compare with a turkey burger or ground beef? I'm all for trying new things, but I'm curious what I should expect.

Tempeh is very interesting...it is soy, but I believe the way it is made its fermented in some way. They have all different kinds of tempeh, different flavors... and even tempeh bacon, which is super good. Since it is a soy product it can take on any flavors that it is cooked in or marinaded in. It's wonderful for you!!! Would be a nice break in animal protein for ya, while still getting protein.

You should give it a whirl!! :)

You can buy a packet from Trader Joe's for $1.69. Like tofu it takes on flavours well. Unlike tofu, you don't have to press the liquid from it, but if you steam it for about 10 minutes it swells a bit and takes up marinades better.

Slice it thinly and whisk taco seasonings in with about half a cup of water; put both in a zip bag and marinate for half an hour or so. I strain off the tempeh slices, pan fry them in a little bit of safflower oil until they're golden brown and add the marinade to the cooking liquid for couscous. Then I put the tempeh in the bottom of hard taco shells and add the couscous on top. You can add cheese and lettuce as well, or use soy cheese if you're vegan.

It's also very good crumbled and sauteed; you can add it to salads, marinara or sauces. Allrecipes and Food.com have many recipes that are quite good.
  • I dont really care for tempeh,
It has a roughish texture, at the what I bought always did :/
So I used to make my own seitan, its pretty good if you know what your doing.
