1990's Diets VS. Today

I recently thumbed through a couple diet books from the 90's. These were, Susan Powter, Stop the Insanity! and Suzanne Somer's, Stay Skinny on Fabulous Food. After a couple inward chuckles, I couldn't help but notice the difference 20 years has made in public knowledge on how to eat right.
These books were filled with warnings about fat grams and all the fats hiding in your avacados, nuts and of course salad dressings. They even encouraged the reader to snack on muffins and breads. The nutrition facts focused on fat grams alone as opposed to looking at all the nutritional elements. There was no mention on filling up on vegetables or adding whole grain to your diet. I guess this is what lead into the explosion of the Atkins diet (polar opposite).
Yes, too much fat will make you fat (especially the bad kind). Too much sugar will also make you fat. And too much starch and bread will make you fat. And sitting on your couch (all the time) will make you fat. Can't we realize that it's all of these things? Where is our moderation?
Any thoughts?
