Hi. I have often heard that it is no good drinking carbonated water - that it must be still. Can anyone please enlighten me as to whether this is true and why? Why is it such a good idea to drink a lot of water when dieting? Why would you not get the benefit from carbonated? Thanks if you can help. I never drink water and find the carbonated easier to drink, but if it is not going to help my diet knowing why still is best might help me to push myself to drink more. Thank you.

Hi, the sodium levels in carbonated water are high in comparison to still water. Sodium makes the body retain water and in turn, hold on to water weight.

Thank you. Always good to know the facts : ) O.k, so that has convinced me that it has to be still. Might try a slice of lemon in it to make it more enticing.
  • Some naturally carbonated water, like Perrier, are very pure and have relatively low sodium. Best to check the label. I struggle to consume enough water , and the Perrier is a nice change to still water.

Perrier yes is better than many, the other issue with carbonated water is it contains CO2 and for some it can be converted to carbonic acid in the stomach. I can only occassionally have carbonated anything or it causes very high acid.

Thanks. I am trying to stick with the still wqter. I'll see how it goes. I'll try to check the lower sodium content ones if I am going to use some carbonated water. Thanks again!
