Need some good advice...

My wife is dead set on purchasing a treadmill so she can exercise indoors. I truthfully told her lets just run outside and save the money. I just feel treadmills are overpriced and I do hate the gym. So if you were to buy one or own one already , what would you recommend? She wants one that at least has a feature that that monitors your heart rate, inclines (she says no manual type, whatever that means) has a decent speed range and good belt. I found one on line for 300 bucks, of course not much to it?

I think I will look at Sears and Academy Sports.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

i think what ever motivates her than it's worth it. Money can be tough to spend... but it's worth her health.

Well personaly I like mine. It is in front of the TV and my man and I have made a deal that if I am watching TV that I am to be on the treadmill, We got ours at Sears. HOWEVER with that said like you, I am not the fan of the gym. So I am also with you that a pair of running shoes and a walk outside with a pedometer attached to your side is a better bet.
IN FACT, Both of us have one and we do a day to day challenge to see who has the most steps in at the end of the day.
 It is a thought

I  my treadmill!!!! My husband purchased one at SEARS it was on sale, and he got a great price. I use it everyday, i run on it doing one of the set programs for 30 min. then hold weights and walk at he highest incline for 30 min. Its great to see how many miles, and calories you are burning...each day i push myself that much harder to burn more cal. then the day before. I get bored with exercise quickly, and need something new, but i am still loving the treadmill....hope this helps

I love my treadmill and I go to the gym. Like Diann, it's right in front of the t.v. I have a very expensive treadmill and would not recommend getting a cheap one from Academy. The classifieds might be your best bet.

My treadmill is nothing special. I bought it at an estate sale so the price was unbeatable. However the incline does not work, not sure if it is because it is on the carpet or what. I have it sitting in my room near a tv. I don't use it as much as I had hoped, truth be told. So I personally am going to try and find a recumbant bike that I can afford. That is what I had been looking for when I got the treadmill.

So in my opinion, you will use a piece of equipment if you know what you really want and it will keep your motivation up. If you get something you only half want you are just not as likely to enjoy it.

    Good luck
  • I own a bowflex treadclimber which is very nice put also very expensive. I really know after owning a few
different treadmills that you honestly get what you pay for. I think the most important thing to look for is how strong the motor is. If it has a week motor then it will try to stop when you begin running on it. Well hope this helps some.

I got mine at sears, it is a nordic track and it originally retailed for 1700, but it was a floor model and marked down to 680. It came with all the warranties and it has been 6 years since I bought it and it is still going strong!

If your wife is wanting to exercise encourage her to do it however she wants! Yes, it may involve spending some money but at least she is ready and willing!

Shop around, look for shops that sell refurbished gym equip (good as new, nice and cheaper than some others) and let her try them out. Some of the cheaper ones really suck and if you are going to spend the money it should be for a good one that she likes or you will waste your money.

I have a ProForm Treadmill and absolutely love it. You can do manual but it has many differenct programs that you can do that simulate climbing hills, doing a 5K, etc. It also comes with a DVD that you can workout to and an internet site where you can download workouts (haven't tried that yet) Mine has movable arm bars with resistance so you can work the arms as well. I use it everyday and haven't never had any issues (crossing fingers now). Oh, and the Cardiac Rehab department where I work also uses the ProForm treadmills too and they obviously get a lot of mileage. Hope this helps!

Got mine at Sears, ProForm xp. It was on sale and I also work there so I got a discount  I jog on it every day. It monitors heart rate, has incline, and good speed. I love it. I haven't had any problems with it. Good luck!

I got mine at Wal-Mart and LOVE it. It has programs for calorie burning. You put your weight in and it keeps track of calories burned, distance, speed and time. It inclines automatically or manually (pushing a button). I paid about $400 for it but I think it is on cheaper now. It also has a fan with 2 speeds which I thought was an extra I wouldn't use but man I use it alot. Also it has heart rate on it. You can also program 10,000 steps in it if you want and it keeps track.

I like my treadmill, got the basic one from Wal-mart, it has a strong enough motor for me to run, should I ever be able to do that, and tension and an incline, it monitors heart, distance and calories. Its in the kitchen and I have a shelf directly in front of it for my dvd player. The downside for me is my feet get hot. if I am not wearing the correct shoes, and I can't go fast enough on it to burn as many calories as I need. 30 mins on the treadmill at 2.5 miles an hour, which is my best time, only burns about half the amount that the same on a bike at 23 mph does. and 23 mph is very easy for me to do. I also try to do interval...that's a minute as fast as I can and then a couple of minutes slower then a minute as fast as I can...etc. its hard for me to do on my treadmill, bumping up the speed takes a few seconds to get to the new number but on the bike I can just peddle faster. So, I use mine when I want to change up my exercises or want to do just a bit more before I go to bed.
BTW, when she says no manual, she means one without a motor. I didn't know they still made them, but it used to be just a tread that basically wrapped around a piece of wood and a pully. ugh. buy the motorized one for sure. going outside is nice, that's true, but if you run in the mornings its dark, or cold, or raining, etc. I like being able to jump on for just a few minutes while I am cooking too. good luck

You also might want to try a "Play It Again Sports" or some similar used sporting goods store. I once bought a gym quality treadmill there for $400. I regret that I moved and left it behind, as it was such a great deal.

Motivational tip: leave the price tag on it. Somehow having to face the amount of dollars I put into it made me get on it.
