First of all, make sure everything is in its correct place. This makes it easier for you to feel comfortable with going through with tasks and activities. Also, after organising your space, make sure you put it back in the right place. You can buy drawer organisers if you'd like to organise that.
Next step, which is the most important:
Use a calender - put it somewhere you can see it everyday. Keep all events written on it so if you lose any sheets of paper that tell you the date, at least you have a brief outline on the calender. It also helps you see how far away certain events are very clearly and enables a clear understanding of how much needs to be done per day.
Use a planner or diary - this is more detailed than a calender as it helps sort out events when they occur on the same day.
Third step is to make a list.
Even if you have the best memory ever, write down all phone numbers, events, shopping lists, appointments on a place easy to refer to.
To-do lists are a great way to get organised. Try looking through the list and seeing which one can be quickly done or is the easiest and start with that if you feel overwhelmed. Little steps go a long way. You can make one for the day (for tasks), for the week (shopping lists, etc) and even for the month (birthdays, bills, appointments).
One thing very important is to keep to the schedule! Think about how important it is and how free you'll be once you finish it.

Agree with above:
Lists: Love them! I have lists for my lists. I wouldn't get anything done with my lists. Not only that, but it feels good to see all that you've had done when you start crossing off the items of your lists!
Calendar: Love my monthly calendar, I can write down my social and work plans and get an idea of what days I'm free so I can be available to do projects around the house.
Clean: I don't spend entire days cleaning anymore. I spend 15 minutes cleaning every night before bed. I put most things away in their place and will do one small area of major cleaning. It's amazing how organized your life feels overall when your living and work space are clean and orderly and you don't have to set large amounts of time aside to do them.0
