Hi all,

I am wondering if anyone has any recommendations for good free or very inexpensive (<$20 per session) grief counseling. I tried looking at YMCA and YWCA but they don't list counseling as a service they provide.

Not sure where else to look.

Thanks.

What area do you live in? I know of some but you probably aren't in Australia!

If it is related to a specific issue, try googling organisations that deal with that issue in your area and get in touch to see if they know of relevant services. For example, if it is related to someone who passed away from cancer, contact the cancer associations in your area.

Can your doctor refer you to anyone?

Is there a freecall helpline you can call and talk to someone on the phone?

Good luck, I hope you can find some help.

    Some ideas:
    - Go to your local House of Worship and ask if they have a list of counselors. Usually they'll have an idea about pricing too and probably can refer you to someone in your price range and someone who is of character.
    - Contact the counselors by phone. Ask them if they charge on a sliding scale. Many counselors do this; they have different fees for different folks. If you're a student or have a limited income, these would qualify you for a lesser fee.

    Hope this helps.

Where do you work? Sometimes they have a crisis hotline you can call, when dealing with stuff that can affect your job preformance. It includes personal stuff too like breakups, fights with family members, death, etc....

When my brother died, I called and got a couple free sessions with a local therapist.

When I worked for Hospice our grief counselors often did community outreach and would speak with anyone, regardless of whether or not their loss was hospice associated.

What area are you located in?

My first loss was at hospice, but in Kentucky. I live in Miami, FL and wasn't able to find a hospice center there with counselors.
  • Call a hospital and talk to the Chaplains. They can refer you, or even help themselves.
