Hi All,
So my normal calorie burning exercise is running and/or Turbo Jams. Both require heavy use of the feet....and I am lucky enough to have a sprained peroneal tendon in my left foot (likely from running) and I can't put weight on it!! I have a post op shoe I am supposed to wear to keep my foot flat and motionless. With this going on for the next few weeks I do not know how to exercise. I do like food and wine so I always used exercise to stay under my goal...and this past week since this happened I haven't been able to stay under goal!
I am sure I could cut something out to help...but I need to move too! Any thoughts on how to burn calories on one foot???

When the contestants on Biggest Loser get hurt they do sitting punching.
  • When I played basketball in college I hurt my ankle pretty bad and was on cruthes for a while. For cardio I had to do the arm bike and throw punches, both of which you can do seated. Put some small weights in your hands whlie throwing punches to add extra difficulty. I am not sure if your gym has an arm bike but perhaps you can buy one online (FYI the arm bike is tougher than riding a regular bike).
  • I feel your pain. I had surgergy about a month ago to have my bunion removed. I can finally start doing some walking of sorts but it's hard to do and I cant walk normal or put full weight. I havent been able to do much and what i have done is mostly ab work and push ups and such. Will be happy when I can get back to running and working out "normally"

Punches are the way to go! They're pretty fun and can blast your hear rate up. Especially with weights, as mentioned.

  • could you use a rowing machine? often suggested for those who can't handle running.

I feel your pain on the wine front, on my limited calories cos I'm so small, I exercise to drink!

Borrow a wheelchair and bomb about in it somewhere flat, I got a great workout at my local Ikea, which has wheelchairs for customers use. Great workout, especially if you're not used to it.

Failing that, plenty of upper body stuff you can do, or if your balance is really good, how about some single leg squats

Swimming? that's non weight bearing. You could always use a float for your lower body if you don't want to kick your legs.

Actually, if you're considering suggestions like swimming, it might be more sensible to ask your doc (or better still your physio) what exercise you can do right now?

I was on crutches for a year so I understand completely!
What I did was lots of upper boxing-you can find videos on youtube and also I did a lot of crutching around, just because I couldn't go for runs, long walks on crutches were probably even more strenuous! :)
    Hope you recover soon!

Such great suggestions!!! I do not have a gym membership for some of the suggestions, but I do have weights and resistance tubing and a chair! I like the idea of finding punching/boxing videos on youtube! Thanks so much everybody! I was so down about the lack of running I could not get creative on the exercise front at all!

walking w/ crutches is still a GREAT workout.

but talk to your PT, they will know without a doubt what you can/should be doing right now.
