I'm glad you found MFP - it's a great tool to help you on your journey to a healthier lifestyle and the people here are so supportive!
There are so many questions when you first start out. Now that I am only ONE POUND from my goal (ok, I'm just a little thrilled with that!) I thought I'd offer suggestions on what worked for me.
1. Remove sugar from your diet. The only sugar you should consume should come naturally from your fruit and vegetables, and even then keep it within your guidelines. I'm convinced that just by removing sugar from our diets most of us would lose weight.
2. Bump up the fibre. Do a google search for high fibre foods and list all the ones you like, or would like to try. Aim for 25-30 grams of fibre a day. Note: I add 1 tablespoon chia seeds into my oatmeal for an added 5 grams each morning. An apple is another 5.
3. Lower your sodium intake. I've been able to consitently (sp) keep mine sodium around 700 grams per day. Many products offer low sodium alternatives now (eg. tomato sauce, canned salmon)
4. Find an exercise you enjoy. I hate exercise - but I discovered I loved playing Pickleball! So find something you like and go have fun!
Tips:
Your target weightloss is an average of 1 lb per week. That's a good goal to have.
Your weight will fluctuate by a pound or two sometimes - if you're on track, don't be alarmed. It will come back down.
Find ways to celebrate your losses that don't involve food. I think all the thrift shops know me by name I'm in there so often, building up my new wardrobe!
Good luck and have fun!
PS: Everyone's journey is different and achieved in his or her own way. This is what worked for me.
