Hi! I'm getting my wisdom teeth out at the end of the month and I've got to say... I'm really nervous. Mostly just because the thought of someone removing my teeth is ickyful, but also because I won't have energy to work out for a few days after and I don't want to get stuck in a rut!

What have been your experiences with getting wisdom teeth out? What were your favorite go to foods (soft ones) that you were able to eat or liked eating after your procedure, that didn't pack on pounds? As nice as eating ice cream sounds (which they suggested), I don't think that would help my waistline while I'm on pain medication on the couch. ;-)

They gave me the whole soft food schtick, but I was back to eating normal food the day after.

The day of the surgery I think I had chili or some type of soup for dinner which was pretty awesome. Low-sugar popsicles are nice, too. As is yogurt, rice, applesauce, pudding, oatmeal, and other soft meats/fish like salmon, tilapia, ground beef.

I had mine out 2 weeks ago. All 4! I had to be IV sudated. It was fine. I still have a small amount of sorness in the jaw on my right side but that is because that tooth was the hardest to get out, it was very impacted. Im a mother of 3 and I have to say I was scarred but the IV wore off in about 30 mins and except the swelling and drooling I was fine. I had family over the next day and by day 4 felt realy good. Day 3 was the hardest. But as far as getting into a rut, take the time to rest and heal- do not push yourself, and you will feel great before you know it! Letting your body heal is better in the long run and keep on MFP- it always keeps me motivated. Plus you can only have soft foods for a while so get some low cal yogurts and yummy soups. IT HELPS!

I only had my lower 2 out (upper 2 never formed) so my surgery wasn't bad. Seriously, I thought the nurse was coming in to move me after being hooked up to the IV and the surgery was over and she was just checking on me. I had to go to a convention a few days later and I was fine. I just had to ask the bartender to give me some salt water to gargle with when I went back to my room :P

Think of the soft-ish foods that you like and you'll be fine. Be sure to rinse and keep your mouth clean. My sister's pockets where her teeth had been got infected and her face puffed up like a chipmunk. Take it easy for a few days so that if there are any stitches, etc they have time to heal. The last thing you want is to be dripping blood from your mouth while you're working out.

I'm getting all 4 out as well, with IV sedation. That's why I'm a little nervous too.... this helped! Thank you for sharing your experience!

My experience was horrible. I was in a lot of pain due to what they call a "dry socket" aka an exposed nerve (sorry to freak you out) and so they had me on Tylenol 3's which are loaded with codeine and made me really nauseous. I ended up taking Advil instead. (These are Canadian names for the drugs, don't know what they're called in the US.) Because I felt sick, I didn't eat anything for a couple days. After the nausea subsided though, I was able to eat anything that didn't require much chewing or opening my mouth very wide (my jaw had also locked open during the extractions and was causing me grief-- but for the record, I had mine removed right in the chair and I wasn't put to sleep for it).

I should mention that my experience is not normal. I have many friends who were 100% the very next day.

I suggest stocking up on fat free puddings and jello... frozen fruit that you can thaw in a bowl (doesn't require much chewing), scrambled eggs maybe as they're soft and a good protein. Hmm... how about some crackers that are soft enough to melt in your mouth? A cut up banana? I would skip out on peanut butter as it will get stuck in the holes left behind by your teeth. Fun times.

Good luck!! I'm sure it will be no big deal! :)

Make sure you eat or drink something before you take your pain meds-they may make you nauseous. You will do great!

I JUST had two of them out a few weeks ago. I went to Smoothie King afterwards and got a massive smoothie for dinner...just don't use a straw! :-) Greek yogurt, soup, jello mousse that kind of stuff. I was obsessive about dry sockets so I ate really cautiously for about a week. I only needed ibuprofen. Good luck! It wasn't bad at all and I was awake for the whole thing!

like graysmom says, NO STRAWS! rest plenty and eat pudding, jello, soup, ice cream, and then you can graduate to pasta and eggs, etc. listen to your body. do not overexert! i had my remaining two taken out in november....

I was a dental assistant for 4.5 years and now im in the dental Hygiene Program. I would suggest eatting soft foods for at least four days. STAY AWAY from ground beef and foods that would get caught in the holes. Yes you will be having holes in your mouth even if they stitch you up food gets stuck! You can eat mashed potatoes, jellos, noodles, soups (again no chuncky stuff), ice creams, cooked veggies(carrots are good) FOLLOW Directions given to you by the surgon! RINCE with salt water after every meal swiching by shaking your head around not by your mouth! Make sure you keep the area clean and bruch your teeth carefully but well! Drink lots of water and keep the gauze in while you eat anything! even after you stopped bleeding! Its yuckie but it will help prevent food from getting stuck. Hope this helps a bit. Not many healthy foods to eat but you wont be eating that much for a few dys trust me so you will be fine!

The root of one of my wisdom teeth wrapped around my jaw bone. I'll never forget that night. It was a Friday night and just me and the dentist. He had let his staff go home for the weekend. I remember him sweating, trying to get that sucker out. To make a long story short - he had to crack the tooth and take it out in pieces. (I almost passed out when he held up one of the pieces to show me. Had to get smelling salts!) He later told me he was very close to sending me off to an oral surgeon because he wasn't sure he was going to get it out.

I was so sore the next day. Fortunately, he gave me a script for Percocet.

I wouldn't worry about gaining weight while getting better. You may not feel like eating for awhile. At least that was my case.

    Good luck!

I was super wise because I had 6 wisdom teeth (2 extras hiding in my gums). I had lots of pain and lots of pain meds for several days. I stuck to soft food for about a week. I didn't want dry sockets because the surgery was bad enough. I did a lot of mashed sweet potatoes, soup, ice cream, pudding, soup (without chunks), etc. Best of luck.
