Everyone says its so bad. I cannot seem to stop drinking it for more than a few days any suggestions on how to stop the cravings?

I slowly got myself off the stuff. For meals I'd have water, but on occasion I would have a diet soda every now and again. As time went on I'd try to get it less and less often. Eventually my cravings for it ceased, but I guess it really depends on the individual and how much you like the stuff. Try not buying it ever. If you don't have easy access to it then you're less prone to just randomly drinking some at times when you don't need it.

You're body is addicted to the caffeine. You will go through withdrawal. You'll get horrible headaches and various other symptoms. If you can grin and bear it for a few days, you'll be fine
  • I switched from sodas to sparkling water and some coffee to keep the caffeine craving going. I then weaned off the caffeine and switched the sparkling water (with lemon, lime or orange slices in it) to regular water.

It was hard for me the first two weeks, but I've been soda free since March of '11, so it works! Just don't freak out if you fall off the wagon - taper off slowly - if you're drinking 6 a day, go to 5.5, then 4...like that.

i use it as a reward now because i love it & don't see much harm in drinking it (besides the chemicals of course)... so i allow myself a diet soda only if i've reached my water goal for the day. ex- maybe for dinner i'll order a diet coke because i drank enough water throughout the day. that way i don't feel deprived of something with zero cals & it ads some variance to what i'm drinking. i'm a type 1 diabetic, so i try not to drink anything at all with carbs.

I used to drink diet coke often---I would probably stop at McDonald's 4 or 5 times a week to get a large diet coke--extra ice--plus I'd have it at home occasionally. The day I started on here, I decided to try and quit drinking diet coke and only drink water. I know that sounds awful but it wasn't that hard, which shocked me. I didn't have the headaches and was so focused on keeping track of what I was eating that I didn't even really notice. It's been around 3 months now and I don't even really miss it. You can do it...just challenge yourself and once you get past a week or so, I bet you'll be fine. Good luck!

I go back in forth with drinking it a lot and then not at all. Right now it is easy to not drink it b/c my mom's in her FL home and I don't have to buy it. So I haven't had a Diet Coke since Jan 1st. I have been drinking my water. I also drink 2 K-cup teas one in the morning and one after dinner. At dinner I have been drinking Diet Snapple which isn't as bad to drink. I have only had a craving about 2 days ago and then I dreamed that I went out and bought it.

    Good Luck to you!!!!
It's just easy to not have it on hand.

I used to love it and would probably buy 1.5 litres every or every other weekend. I would also always have some with my food whenever I ate out. I stopped buying it though so that I never had it at home and would drink water instead. I also stopped ordering it at restaurants, instead I order still water or sparkling water now. After a while you stop craving it.

There's nothing wrong with diet coke. My nutritionist recommended to start a gradual switch to caffeine-free though. I was a little skeptical, but it does taste the same.

I first replaced it with diet green tea then eventually switched to water.
I think it was easier to wean one thing at a time.
First the carbonation then the splenda.

I've never been a HUGE coke drinker like my parents. Sometimes after school, I'll want a diet coke or something. So I'll have it. If I'm at a party and I don't want soda, I won't have it. Don't try to completely deny yourself soda. Just drink it in moderation, then drink tons of water and try to flush it out. Try to cut down to one a day, then one every few days. I usually only have two or so a week. If it's really a huge problem for you, when you feel like you want one, just drink ice water. If it's the bubblieness you crave, make some carbonated fruit juice. My mom always made it when I was a kid, and I'd take it any day over soda! Carbonated water with some peach juice or white grape juice in it. It's amazing!

Hi! I'm Sandy and I'm a diet coke addict.

Off and on with giving it up, cutting back, etc. I have to say my water intake is so much better than it use to be cutting back, but I still have one or two a day. usually.

I'm there with you - but I don't have an easy answer. I love diet coke!!

I have trouble with this, too. LOVE the stuff. I quit once before by every few days dropping my consumption a little. I got down to those little teeny tiny cans and then just allowed myself half of one in the end before I quit all together. It was the only way I could do it without awful headaches, etc.
While I was quitting I did allow myself to open a can and drink a small amount if I started to have a headache but then I would promptly pour the rest down the sink. I wasted a good deal but then I was off it and didn't mind it.

A few months ago I slipped and had one in the a.m.. I got so much done that day on a caffeine buzz that I rationalized having it again..and again...and again. Now I'm back to weaning myself off it the same way....

What helps, too, is finding a healthy water additive.

I used to drink Diet Coke constantly - over the past year I stopped buying it at the grocery store and ordering it at restaurants and now I'll occasionally buy one at work. It took a couple weeks after cutting it out to not want is as much, but it worked!

ETA - I might have replaced it with more coffee, though :blushing:

Nothing wrong with Diet Coke if you enjoy drinking it. It's not actually bad for you, it offers as much nutritional benefit as water.

Everyone doesn't say that just a vocal few. It is not the devil and I'm sure there are much worse that you can drink (or eat) than diet soda.
  • I switched to caffeine free about 2 weeks ago! I did get some headaches but they are finally gone. I was a diet coke addict myself. I am slowly cutting back on sodas all together though because I feel so much better without them! Last week I allowed myself one caffeine free with lunch and 1 with dinner. This week I am limiting it to one 12 ounce can with dinner and hopefully I will give them up for good! I used to order diet coke at restaurants as well however its not healthy and it costs so much money !! I am saving a bunch by switching to water. For Christmas I received a Britta pitcher and 6 filters so I will have free water for a year (I don't have to pay for water at my apartment.)
