My hardest thing so far on this journey is not being able to snack. I love junk food, which is what caused most of my weight gain to begin with. Just completely cutting it out my daily routine is difficult. Do you guys have any healthy replacements for my junk food??! I need help!!!

I customized my plan to include a morning snack, an afternoon snack and an evening snack. Plan your calories well and you can have some things like 1 to 1.5 oz of potato chips or a small piece of chocolate or cake. Healthy replacements are dry roasted (not oil roasted) or raw nuts (in moderation - high in calories and fat - have an ounce at a time), carrot/celery/peppers cut up with hummus, non/low-fat yogurt (try the nice thick Greek kind), fruit.

Fit snacks into your calorie amount, it's not that difficult.

Snacks are good to have through out the day, but if you feel yourself going over board, try a piece of gum. It helps calm my appetite.
  • I love greek yogurt mixed with cinnamon and apple slices to dip. Sometimes I buy those 100 Cal packs of cookies.

Hey! I too am a junk food junkie. I often say I need chocoholics anonymous...seriously addicted!

I'm on day 5 of no chocolate, and going strong.

I had a trainer tell me the key is to eat 5 to 6 small meals a day, no more then 3 hours apart. This way you still get to snack, but make it healthy snacks...yogurt and granola and berries is my personal fave (gets that sweets craving gone).

    That way you're never hungry.

Another trick is to brush your teeth after every meal, so you dont have the taste of your meal lingering, and leaving you wanting more.

ALSO, one more trick....when you get that craving, chug a glassof water instead, and wait 20 minutes...they say craving only last 20 minutes ("they" have clearly never met a chocoholic! haha)

    Good luck!!
  • haha Roshams - "they" lol! I too find the water trick to work great though - especially a sugar-free flavored water. most of the time, I am thirsty, not hungry.. <-- wish I'd figured that out sooner!
For the chocolate craving, mini tootsie rolls run just under 100 calories for 9 of 'em

Great tip about the water! I have actually noticed myself not quite as "hungry" anymore since I've started to drink more water. But I sill have the urge to snack!! lol. I really enjoy my 100 cal packs because I get "just enough" to quench that urge to snack. Thanks for the great tips:)

its better not to cut anything out completely, else youll just end up craving it and more likely to fall back into bad habits.

Just moderate what you are, and remember to log everything and keep that calorie deficit! Works for me! :D
  • I LOVE chips and dip, any kind, any flavor and that has been very hard to give up. I found Pretzel Crisps to substitute for chips, they are salty enough to satisfy, then for dip my favorite replacement is Athenos Spicy Three Pepper Hummus. It has enough flavor to it to make you feel like you are eating something forbidden.
  • Some things I like to use: an apple, an orange, a banana, a handful of dry cold cereal, a carrot, count out 10 M&M's or something similar, chew some gum, drink more water. Sometimes the urge to snack is related to me being slightly dehydrated. Sometimes it's just because I'm bored, so I change what I'm doing and the urge goes away.

Me too - I love to snack. I seem to be ok in the daytime but after dinner I love to nibble whilst I watch TV. I usually have fruit, nuts, dutch crisp bakes, low cal hot chock drinks, two pieces of dark chocolate. At the weekend I use my snack cals on a few glasses of wine. I also excercise more to balance things out (and not feel so guilty).

One of my favorite snacks was sour cream and salsa with tortilla chips. When i went low carb couldn't have the chips any more, but I found multi colored bell peppers were even better, tasty, good for you and a nice crunch. Would work well with hummus also I would think.

I'm also adapting recipes to be less sugar/lower calories. Over Christmas I did cookies and muffins for the kids and they loved them. You can save alot of calories subbing out the sugar and brown sugar with stevia/splenda/xylitol etc. I also switched white flour with whole wheat and almond meal blend.
