Target Heart Rate

Normally when I go to the gym I do either the treadmill or elliptical on the cardio setting and try to stay near the target heart rate (156 for me)...
However I kind of want to start doing a C25K, or at least try I'm really out of shape so I may have to take the weeks slower at first though. However I'm sure at some points my heart rate will be above the 156, is that safe? Last night I did Your shape fitness evolved and on some of the exercises I had a hard time with (or when playing Dance Central) i have had my heart rate up to the low 170s and although I couldn't really talk and couldn't have stayed that for long it wasn't painful or anything. I hit 181 once yesterday with the your shape which is the highest I have seen with my heart monitor but that was only for a moment and I stopped for a bit. My heart rate always drops down fast if I just stop and walk in place for a minute though.
would it be ok to keep pushing though say the 160s?

If you don't have any medical problems which might cause problems (i.e. asthma or heart problems) you should be fine, even if your heart rate is higher than 156. When I go jogging, my heart rate often goes up to 190s. I am very tired afterwards, but I have never noticed any other problems. Hence I assume that a heart rate in the 160s or 170s should be okay.0

Agree with the previous poster - if you are healthy, please don't get stuck on heart rate...I run, and mine goes up to close to 180 at times...nothing wrong with it...My "target" heart rate is around 160 - for the bulk of my runtime, it sits at between 165 and 175...No problem, actually, you burn a lot more calories....0
