How do you calculate calories for marinades?

I have a hard time eating things plain. I like this marinade and want to use it but enter into the food diary too. How exactly do you calculate that? If I use (for example) 1 cup of marinade but it's only to cover the fish and cook it in...I have a bunch leftover in the pan so it's not really 1 cup.

How do you figure out how much was used?

Well, I suppose you could measure the remaining liquid. For example, say you started with 1 cup, and measure the remaining liquid after cooking and find you have 3/4 of a cup, that means you've used 1/4 cup of marinade. Although, that may not be very accurate due to evaporation and fat from the meat finding its way into the marinade...

You could also just take your best guess. I mean, how many calories can we be talking about here? I can't imagine it being more than 150... Not the end of the world if you don't log it exactly.

if its something youre just marinating in but not cooking with, ive heard to use 10% of the calories from the marinade.
when i buy marinated pork loins and stuff, i cook the sauce with it and just count it all. no need to over-complicate it. i doubt theres enough calories in teh marinade to throw me off either way

Well do you make your own marinade or use a bottle? If you make your own what I do is just look up something similar and add a few tables spoons. If from a bottle I just take a guess as to how much is on there. You don't have to be THAT strict. I used to count every spray of cooking oil and dab of sauce but that gets to be a bit much. If you know you ate a lot of condiments just add an extra few calories to something.

You guys are right...I'm sure it's not that bad when it's only being used as a marinade. I'm trying to be honest with myself and track things accordingly. If I start skipping here and there well eventually it'll add up. But you're right, it's minimal calories.

I don't make my own. I use Lawry's Hawaiian Marinade. (Soooo good on fish!)
