Hi all,

I need someone that understands this food diary stuff to help me out please.

Today I had an orange (probably the least exciting thing you will read today  ) and I went to put it in the ffod diary and now I'm kind of stuck.
I've entered it as

Fruit - Orange = 1 serving - 1 piece.

Whether an whole orange counts as 1 piece or not I'm not sure. It was given to me on a plate cut into eights and putting 8 pieces seems wrong. Regardless of whether it was cut in half quarter m thirds or eights its still the same amount of orange. So I put 1 piece.

However I have since found this

Oranges raw all commercial varieties = 1 serving - 1 cup/sections... 1 large (dimensions) 1 small (dimensions) 1 fruit (dimensions) or 100g

Obviously i have no idea if it's dimensions as it was delivered in sections and she didn't weigh the thing, why would you?

Anyhow what is confusing me what is the difference between

Fruit - Orange
and
Oranges raw all commercial varieties

I'm well within all my allowances so not fretting about it, but am confused as to which I should put it under. Was I right the first time or should I have put it under the other one?

I bought a food scale and cut out all the guess work. I love it. :drinker:

When I go into the data base to record something, sometimes there are waaaay too many options, however, it doesn't matter which one you choose so long as the portion is correct. Sometimes I have to finagle to find one that fits, some are in grams, some are a whole banana, but sometimes there's large, some small, some say a cup chopped. People add information if there isn't something that their food directly reflects so you can get multiples. So, just keep trying or take what you have, so long as you truely think that it's correctly recorded.

I choose : orange medium= 1 or 1/2 what ever your had. Scales are good when we are at home and we can weight our own food. When we are eating our, then we have to reach for other options.

    Thanks for the replies. :)

If it had been me at home having it I would have weighed it or others in the bag that would be about a similar size, but when you are given a plate of sliced oranges its a tricky one to estimate. I'm usually at least 100 calories below my allowance usually a lot more than that so if I've entred it wrong it won't matter, but it is a tricky one to enter.

You'll notice in the food diary there are some option with a star (*) before the name. These are items added by users, and are not always accurate. There are others that do not have this star, which I believe is the "Oranges raw all commercial varieties" one. These are added to the database by an official food database from somewhere else (a USDA database?). These are more accurate. And, you either weight your food on a food scale, get out the measuring cups, or take your best guess.

Don't get too obsessed with it. You will underestimate some items and overestimate others and it will all work out in the end.
