Hi there, I started here yesterday and decided that this time, I really need to do this. I had lost 60 pounds a couple of years ago and gained it all back and then some. I wasn't prepared for this yesterday so I ate like I normally do and 2 things surprised me. The amount of calories I ate was lower than my goal but I was appalled at the amount of sodium I ate... 59 grams more than I should have had! Ouch! I'm a self-proclaimed saltaholic. If anyone has ideas how to reduce this while still having flavour in my food, I'd love to hear your ideas! Also, I am going to be around here for a long while so I could use some friends. Please add me if you're looking for people to help motivate you. I plan on trying to be on here as often as I can so I can cry for help in my moments of weakness and I'm happy to support anyone else who might need the same! :)
Thanks for listening and good luck in all your journeys!

I had to cut out adding salt to any foods, except for eggs I just can not eat eggs without a bit of salt. Any pre-packaged foods that I buy I buy the lower sodium version if available. My sodium seems to always be over target as well even at that so clearly I eat to much pre-packaged foods. lol

The main thing to do to reduce your sodium is to cut out processed foods. Make sure to drink lots of water to wash the sodium out of your system too.
  • I'd suggest spicing things up a bit! Do you like spicy foods? If you add cayenne pepper or chili pepper or any spices that'll give your food a little kick, you'll never even notice that it isn't salty. :) I used to be a saltaholic too! I think when I started eating more fresh foods, I realized that salt didn't need to be added to everything to make it taste good.

    Good luck!!!

If you aren't ready to get off the salt bandwagon, try lite salt. I use mortons. My husband and I use so much less and it lowers the sodium levels. Mrs. Dash is also my savior. Best luck to you! i know how it feels. I lost 40lbs and then gained back all of it plus 10. starting over again is rough. But, knowing that i did it before is even more motivating. :-) Kudos to you for jumping in!

I really like the flavor of Mrs. Dash on things like steamed veggies. It give you flavor, but is salt free!

Best of luck on your journey!!!

Pre packaged foods always contain alot.of sodium....it may take you a few days to figure out what you should be eating. Just remember to log it if you're gonna eat it!

Just take it one day at a time! It is possible!

  • I agree that spices are the way to go, and trying to cook your own meals so you can control what's them

I second the natural spices, mrs. dash, cut out processed foods, and drink lots of water that everyone above me posted.
    No original idea here

I'll have to check out the "Lite Salt" option I think. Also, I don't tend to salt my food as I'm cooking it but then I over salt when I'm about to eat. I'm wondering if I salt during the cooking process if I then wouldn't need to salt after? Something to try I guess! :) Thanks for the advice!

I don't salt when I'm cooking anymore, and I use Losalt if I do need to add any.

170lbs seems a long way off doesn't it, but if you break it down into 7-10lb amounts, it suddenly seems so much more achievable. I still have a very long way to go, but it gets closer every week, and it's so nice when you achieve those mini-targets.

Don't try to win the race, the important bit is taking part!

    Good luck!
