Whats the story of this Sodium in our body :) ?

Hi all !

I started a month back and am going slow and steady. I eat all my calories for the day less 200 ..... since I am a vegetarian and normally eat home cooked food ... I feel its hard to track my exact calorie intake. Anyways :) I want to understand about SODIUM intake in particular. In anycase ,this website suggests that per day 2500 Sodium to be taken. Is that healthy ? Is that the max ? Does more sodium intake adds on to the weight in the body ? Does it make it more difficult to loose ? Whats the story of this Sodium in our body :) ?

Please if anyone could clear my doubts !
