Bacon and sodium?

Well bacon isn't exactly health food, but absolutely eat it in moderation. Bacon is one of God's gifts to us puny humans...the greatest food in existence. I like to ration it out so eating it is like a treat
bacon is health food, love it. . . eat it, protein, fat, oh yes, low in calories0 -
I don't believe there are any bad foods. Eat what you want, but don't make it a large % of your overall diet. Bacon is my go too food if I need fat / protein to hit my macros for the day. Although, one thing...the flavors of bacon and peanut butter do not go well together considering they are amazing foods in practically all other application. They kind of seem to cancel each other out.0

Bacon is the one food that I have cut out completely.
The sodium and the calories are just not worth it for me
:flowerforyou:
35 calories a slice.... not worth it? madness
where the heck are you finding 35 calorie a slice bacon?? Lowest I have been able to find is like 260 for 3 slices.....my 2 cents worth on this subject....if you want bacon - eat it..being on this site for over year I have learned there is nothing you can not eat...budget for it, treat yourself....this is about living ...which means everything in moderation...you can have your cake and eat it too...and FYI - I too love bacon and treat myself on the weekend to a couple of slices..then I go to the gym and work my *kitten* off and do not feel guilty for one minute that I ate the bacon0 -
If I could marry bacon...I would, three times over and be a poly. I love it that much.

I love Bacon but after Dr. Oz came out and said that Nitrites may be linked to Alzheimer's, I only get the the naturally cured, nitrite free bacon ($$$) on the rare occasion we eat it - like all treats should be. Breakfast is now about oatmeal or protein shakes.0

I say eat it in moderation. MODERATION! Everything in moderation.0

Also, I think there should be bacon flavored tooth paste!0

Dr Oz is 80% garbage for tv viewers, and 20% helpful.0 -
I love bacon. Sometimes, I eat it as a snack.0

My oscar meyer lower sodium bacon is 70 cals for 2 slices. So that's 35 per slice, I get it from my grocery store.
To the OP, bacon is not "evil." no food really is if you eat it in moderation. there are some food I had to cut out of diet because I just don't know how to moderate them. But two slices of bacon once or twice a week is not going to do any harm.0 -
bacon is pure crap.
^^blasphemy I had 4 slices this morning...93 calories0 -

I have to agree with that statement, but I have heard elsewhere the negative effects of nitrites and since my memory is so bad anyway I am not taking any chances! :laugh:0 -
Just watch your sodium the rest of the day. Bacon (I don't eat it because I don't eat pork) is actually considered a fat. Enjoy your once a week bacon splurge!0

Lol, I would eat bacon often instead of never but on a SODIUM restricted diet I am not willing to give up that much sodium to one tiny little thing. As to not eating because of fat, that is not a good argument, most of us on a low cal diet are missing the fat most of the time and so I agree, for instance the uncured bacon no nitrates or nitrites from our local deli is healthy and crazy delish, just 400mg sodium per slice, shoot. Lower sodium is like 250 so yep, bacon is soo ocassionally on my menu, but my hubby on a water pill eats it all the time but I prefer to stay medication free, lol.0

My mom has always boiled the balibels water before cooking it to get rid of some of the salt. I eat turkey bacon which still has a lot of sodium but I do the same thing with boiling it first before cooking it.0

One serving of lettuce has about 100 times more nitrites than a serving of bacon. If you're worried about nitrites, honestly, fresh vegetables are the biggest contributor of nitrites to the human diet, since they get nitrites from the soil.
To be honest, none of the real research into nitrites show any kind of adverse health effects, and claims that they were bad for you stemmed from very shaky correlations from 60 year old research.0 -
Ifvim going to have bacon, I have it grilled, with poached eggs, grilled tomatoes and mushrooms and make it my main meal of the day. But yes, I do also make sure I drink tons of water that day and the next.
Life is all about balance , I reckon. Nothing is banned and everything in moderation.0
