Elliptical Trainer

Forgive me but I am a complete novice when it comes to Cardio equipment. I have two questions and I hope you can help me.
Question 1
Is a Cross Trainer the same as an Elliptical Trainer?
Question 2 - Assuming the answer is yes.
The one I have (Reebok made) has different programs increasing in levels. P1 being the easiest and P8 being the hardest. Anyway, P1 says I burnt 60 calories in 10 minutes but the rest say 55 in 10 minutes. Not sure how. I did a full 60 minutes in it and it says I burnt 330 calories, but when I use an online tool and input my weight/height/sex/time it says I burnt 1021 (http://www.healthstatus.com/calculate/cbc).
Anyway, my question is - Which do I believe?
I have a HRM on order with Amazon and once that arrives I will be taking the information from that but in the meantime I am hoping to get the most accurate information as possible.
I have been advised to take an average of the two but I would still prefer to know which is more accurate.
If anyone can help I would be most grateful.

The 1021 seems high unless you really busted your butt doing it and 300 seems really low. The 55 to 60 calorie range seems about right for 10 minutes depending on how fast/slow you are doing it. I do the ellipitical for 70 minutes and burn an average of about 600-650 depending on how I bust my butt. When I used my HRM when I did the ellipitical it showed that I burned 200 to 300 more calories then what the gym machine showed. Since I always used the machine calories I continue to stay with that number.
I am headed to the gym in about a half hour, I will check to see what mine shows at 10 minutes.
Hope that helps!0 -
It varies on how hard you are going. A HRM is the best way to gauge for you.
My machine said 1500+ yesterday for 75 minutes but my HRM said just over 1000.
That is for me. An hour on the elliptical going at a decent rate, keeping your heart rate at 60-80% of MAX should burn approx 600-900 varying by person.0 -
For 10 minutes on the elliptical, I burned 86 calories!0
