Perhaps another stupid question. Ok, i have heard too many times that white potatoes are not so good for you, compared to sweet potato. Now i would like to know if i made mash from it and added a Tbsp of bran and up the fibre content, would they now be equally healthy?

I eat white potatoes all the time and the weight continues to fall off of me. It is all about moderation...with carbs, fiber, calories. I personally think it is all about how you prepare the potato. I bake it and eat it with no toppings or a little light sour cream. But then again, I like plain. I think the problem with potatoes is often, people prepare them with grease or add a ton of butter to make them taste better. I'm sure you will get other opinions on this...but this is what works for me.

I find nothing wrong with a white potato, vs. a sweet potato. A sweet potato is much much higher in Vitamin A and aside from their difference in taste, I'm a believer of a calorie, is a calorie, is a calorie. In my eyes, a potato is a carbohydrate in my diet.

Adding fiber? I don't know, do you need fiber in your diet?

In the end, it comes down to your preference.
  • Eat the white potato, they're good for you. I actually enjoy combining the sweet potato and white together, delicious mashed.

I like both. Nice source of potassium.

    I don't think so!

White potatoes may not be as 'good' as sweet potatoes but I still enjoy them regularly because they aren't bad! I will sometimes make some roast potatoes or wedges with some olive oil and seasoning and have a white and sweet potato mix. Truth is I don't enjoy sweet potato as much as I do white and I am not willing to remove them from my plate when I can lose weight eating them!

There is always a bad, good, better, best option with food I would rahter explore foods in all the categories rather than try to eat from the best range all the time - it helps me with moderation and to not fall off the wagon! :drinker:

    Its not a stupid question....

For some people like me, I get extremely sick - I cant digest foods like potatoes (very tricky metabolic issue that a doctor is monitoring)...

If you were looking for the healthier of the two.. its definitely sweet-potato hands-down...

I eat white potatoes a few times a week and I still lose weight. I usually avoid mashed potatoes because I tend to eat more and I add extras that I don't need to. My favorite way is to quarter and boil them with the skins on since the skin contains more fiber than the white potato itself. I weigh out a a serving of about 150 grams then I add a ton of black pepper, a bit of salt and a teaspoon of light margarine. I also have a favorite recipe for oven baked fries that are similar to "potato roasters" you buy in the store.

P.S. I added my oven fries recipe to the recipe section.
