I have a favorite recipe for oven baked fries that tastes similar to Potato Roasters you buy in the store. I believe the basic recipe was from a long forgotten website, then I tweaked it to my family's tastes since I have two picky children. I don't follow a low sodium diet so I add salt but you can replace the garlic salt with garlic powder if you wish. I think fries should be a little salty ![:) :)](https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/resources/emoji/smile.png)
Oven baked fries:
5-6 white potatoes (russet works best)
1 Tbsp canola or olive oil (can reduce to 1/2 Tbsp but they brown less)
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp garlic salt
1 tsp onion powder
1 Tbsp Mrs Dash (we use garlic herb)
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp dried basil
Scrub potatoes and cut into wedges or cubes. I leave the peels on for added fiber. Toss with 1 Tbsp oil. In a large ziploc bag mix all the spices together then add the potatoes and shake to coat throughly. Bake in a single layer in a metal pan sprayed with a bit of cooking spray. I bake at 350 for 15 minutes then flip and cook another 10 - 15 minutes until tender and slightly brown.
The recipe is very flexible. You can add red pepper flakes for more heat, or omit any spice you don't like. I have used a similar recipe for sweet potato fries but I added cumin, omitted the onion powder and used half the garlic.
P.S. You can plug the recipe into your calculator or just log the weight of the potato and a 1/4 of the oil per serving since the spices don't add many calories.
