confused on the calorie counter

So my calorie counter is set to 1400 calories/day. My food intake today was 1150 calories with exericise burn of 716. It says that my net calorie is 414. I read that net calories is better if you have a negative number because that means your loosing weight. I haven't weighed myself yet and I won't be for a while but I would think with being about 300 calories under my allowed calories plus my exericise that I would have a negative net number...?
I'm sure this reads out very confusing like but hopefully someone understands what I'm trying to say.
