Best way to measure distance walking

I had a step meter before - but it was highly inaccurate. I like walking, but like to vary my route, so knowing how far I have gone is difficult. Ideas? Suggestions?

  • Google Earth. Download it--there is a tool to draw your route on the map and it will measure it for you.

I don't have a smartphone, so I use Runkeeper or Mapmyrun to plot out my course on their websites, and time myself to get my distance, pace and calories burned. If you have a smartphone, the have apps that can log all that for you.

I've climbed mountains with Endomondo in the past. Can't recommend it enough - it does all sorts of travel, not just walking. I'll be using it for cycling when I start tomorrow, but I once accidentally changed it to 'kite-surfing'. The list is practically endless! It tracks, uploads everything to the internet including your full route length and altitude, speeds and calorie burn, as well as times for each mile and a total overall time. It can shout your mile and total times at you as you go along, and you can also use a feature where you can send a link and when you're out and about, people can watch you real-time and cheer you on with messages sent to your phone.
