Hey!
I was born with flat feet and little muscle in my ankles, it causes me to walk on the insides of my foot and they cave in while walking/running

Can anyone help with suggests of exercise's that don't put too much strain on the ankles?
or even a gradual muscle strengthening exercise for ankles?

:)

  • I don't know about strengthening the ankles, but swimming is a very good exercise. I know it's more for the summer months, but most gyms and YMCAs have indoor pools, if you can afford a membership.

I also suggest belly dance. I don't do it much because I have so little room in which to practice. I mainly have to do it when the roommates aren't home so I can use the living room without them complaining about me taking over the tv/dvd player when they're the owners (hubby and I share with another couple, and though we're equal on the bills, sometimes it feels like we're just guests in their home). However, most of the beginner moves are very low impact and very slow, with little to no extra strain on the ankles.

And then there's geocaching. There are several different levels. All you need is a gps and a sense of adventure, and many caches are placed in areas accessible to wheelchairs, so they're easy to get to, requiring only gentle walking. Stick to those rated 1/1 (lowest difficulty, easiest terrain) if you feel like trying it. You'll burn something like 300 calories/hour.

There are lots of others. For example, I've never been able to do one, but if you can do chin ups, you don't even use your ankles. One my grandmother taught me is the upside-down-bicycle. You lay on your back, hold your legs up in the air (supported by your hands holding your thighs), and just pedal in the air like you're pedaling a bicycle.
