I received my Polar FT4 yesterday through the post. I will be trying it out tomorrow. I had received money for my birthday a little while back and used it to buy the HRM.

I could not believe how damn easy it was to set-up and use, what a breath of fresh air!!

So many things nowadays almost require the person that is going to use the object to have a degree in Physics LOL.

I just bought mine last week. I LOVE it! Best of all, it is so super user friendly. I like knowing exactly how many calories I've burned..Let me know how you like it:smile:

You will LOVE it! I just got mine a little over a week ago, & I'm addicted to it! I LOVE seeing what I'm really burning & I think it even pushes me harder because I want to see a big number. It's awesome :)

I am looking forward to exercising tomorrow to try it out for the first time :D

I have to say, I am not very technical and if I could set it up, anybody should be able to. It was the setting up bit that worried me, but there was absolutely no need to be worried at all!

Why can't everything be so simple to use.

Cool!!! I want one! I read some of the more expensive models also tell you when your in the "fat burning" zone...I don't think the FT4 does that, does it? What does the Ft4 do other than tell you how many calories you burn? Also, do you have to wear one of those chest things? If so....is that uncomfortable? I'm thinking about buying one, but I wanna know more....

Yes and no. The FT4 may tell you when you are in your "fat burning zone"--the only problem is: there is NO "fat burning zone". Or at least the fat you burn during exercise has no real effect on losing stored body fat (it's the calories that count, not the fat). Polar makes a gazillion dollars off the "fat burning zone" concept, so they are going to ride it for all it's worth.

I bought the FT4 a few months ago, when I went back running... after many years of 0 exercise. I loved it. When I realized after a few months that I haven't stop running and still loved it, I gave my Polar FT4 to my daughter, and bought myself another Polar watch, a bit more sophisticated. Great product ! You will love it ! And it will help you stay focus on your goals and your training. Great buy!

I got mine earlier this week - in a lovely pink - very simple to set up. I don't know why I resisted buying one for so long - it is a fabulous tool - my earlier calorie estimates were way off!

IMO, everybody that trains should seriously think about buying such a watch. So useful. Really.

I bought the RS300X. It tells you in which training zone's your are working in (there's 5 - and for fitness, you want to mostly stay in zone 1 & 2 (where the heart beat is slower), but also want to go in the 3-4-5 zones for short periods of time, to build cardio and strength). You can also add a footpod and/or GPS on it, so it tracks your speed, pace, mileage, HB, calories, and a few other features as well. I don't use all of the features, but I needed those extra information to keep going. I bought mine on eBay. Since I run, I always wear the chestband, and you strap the GPS around the arm, but you don't feel them when they're well adjusted.

Love my Polar..By far the best piece of equipment I've bought thus far. My only regret is NOT getting one a year ago when I started this journey!

You do wear a heart strap and it is easy to use and not uncomfortable at all.. I don't even know its on to be honest.

I love the fact that you can scroll through while working out and it will tell you if you are in "your" zone. LOVE IT!

Very basic, very easy to use.. I think its going to be a big help for me..

Be cautious with the myth about the so-called fat burning zone. Read this from Active.com

    http://www.active.com/triathlon/Articles/The-Myth-of-the-Fat-burning-Zone.htm

In order to maximize the use - you will need to read about HR training. There are several good books - so take advantage of the public library.

Also, make sure you rinse off your strap after use. The deposit of minerals (mainly sodium) can lead to erroneous readings. Polar is a very sturdy brand, but make sure you read the section on how to care for your monitor - in particular the chest strap.

to the poster wondering if the chest strap was comfy, its just like band on a sports bra, its nice and wide so doesn't dig in or cause discomfort

Love my polar! Just remember to wet your sensors, make sure you actually start the time after it finds your hr and check if it's water resistant. Have fun!

Out of interest, does anybody know if you can wear the strap and connector around the top of the arm?
  • LethaSue

No, you can't wear it on your arm. It has contacts that read your heart in your chest. It wouldn't work on your arm. The watch part goes on your wrist. The chest strap is very comfortable though, soft and not a bother at all.

I got one a few weeks ago. Its so much different the calories on the gym machines and even more then the games for the kinect I play (they really underestimate calories, I think they assume everyone is fit)

I honestly think I have exercised more just to play with it lol.

They are much more comfy then I expected to. It doesn't really feel any different then the bottom strap of a sports bra.

Ahh thanks. I saw some piccies of people that were wearing the strap and connector on their arm, but it was probably a different one completely.

Question for you all: Were you under or over estimating the amount of calories you were burning? Anyone compared theirs to myfitnesspals values?

The only problem is that the fact that an HRMs numbers are different from MFP numbers is not evidence that the HRM numbers are more accurate.

In many cases they will be, but only because many of the MFP listings are so vague. For some activities, esp walking on a treadmill, MFP numbers will be the most accurate.
