How can I avoid midnight snacking?

I often wake up about twice a night with the munchies. I'll typically down a handful of raisins, a guiltless 130-calorie midnight snack, but sometimes I'll indulge in 500 calories worth of milk and bread or even something sweet. I generally try to snack on something healthy though, like the raisins, but I'd rather not snack AT ALL during the night. When I simply "just ignore the urge and go back to sleep," I CAN'T go back to sleep--at least not for half an hour or more.

Any hints on pre-bed meals/snacks to help avoid midnight cravings? Or should I just stick to that handful of raisins? (If so, what other healthy, low-cal midnight snacks do you recommend?) Thanks MFPers!

Hire an armed guard for the kitchen. Order him to shoot to kill.

I'm a big fan of toast and PB as a late night snack.
