Hi

I recently read this article and enjoyed it. I wondered what others thought of the tips in here - is this what you would recommend?

    It's much too long for me to read but if it's advocating a progressive, HEAVY weight-lifting program then it's golden.

    Absolutely! No question about it; this is completely accurate!
    Lifting weights does have all the benefits mentioned, including increased muscle density (reducing osteoporosis risk), stronger muscles (not bulkier), and increased metabolism. My favorite part is the contradiction of the popular belief that one should lose weight first and then work on "toning." Muscle burns more calories and increases metabolism, helping one to lose weight in the first place.

    Though it's long, this article is a must-read for any women who are afraid of weight-lifting. Don't live in fear and flab any longer!! ;)

    pretty accurate, based on the quick scan I gave. Her results are consistent with mine and many of the other ladies on here who find lifting heavy gave them a better leaner, tighter look, not bulk. We have many many posts on this same subject on this board, where lots of ladies have given their comments, and a number of great "non-bulky" pictures. :) So a search may give you some more great tips.

    If you still have fat to lose, you may see some appearance of "bulk" from the fat over and under the muscle, but once you drop that, you will be less "bulky". Its actually the fat that's bulky.

    I personally find I lose better, and improve my strength training when I also add on higher protein levels. I lose better, tighten better, drop inches better - with a combo of strength and cardio vs cardio only.

    It recommends the "Starting Strength" program for beginners, which is a very good, if not the best, beginners weight training program.

    The issue is whether or not you can learn to do the lifts properly, whether or not you have any physical limitations that prevents you from doing the lifts, whether these limitations are correctable, and how to correct them.

    I read and enjoyed your idea's and suggestions. I used to be a fitness trainer for the YMCA many years ago and was buffed. When you stop and don't use it any longer you lose it for sure.I am getting back into shape and will start my weight lifting shortly. I like your suggestions and idea's thanks for sharing.

    I was a cardio junkie but now I do cardio and weight training. I'm a noob at it but I'm already getting results. I play with the free weights for simple arm moves but stick to machines. Plus, I go to an all ladies gym so there isn't typical gym equipment in there like a bench press for example. I feel fantastic though. I highly recommend lifting for ladies. I've had better, faster, sexier results in the last month of lifting than the previous 10 months of cardio.

    I've definitely been sold on lifting heavy. My reward for completing the 30 day shred is going to be a session with a personal trainer so I can learn good form and get started!

    It's working for me!

    I was doing weights classes at the gym for a year before I started on Fitness Pal, without seeing a major change in my physical appearance. The weight loss was immediate when I started counting calories on this site - I was truly amazed at the results!

    I can feel the muscle tone underneath and it's starting to show. I definitely feel fitter and stronger too!

    I was scared of weight training as well, until a gym instructor convinced me to try her class - there are more women in these classes than men, so it's not scary at all!

    It has helped me get through the plateau for sure.

    LOVE definition. I've been lifting heavy for over a year, and I'm not bulky at all. Just TONE ;)
