I haven't cut dairy out, but I have been limiting it. I just found out here recently that dairy causes acne. Which I'm wondering why my skin has been acting up. I do think a person should take in some calcium wether it is thru dairy food or a supplement, to prevent bone density loss.

I am following the Jamie Eason livefit trainer and there is no dairy except greek yogurt. Still, I add milk to my protein powder. I don't think there is anything wrong with dairy, my husband swears it's the ideal post-workout recovery drink.

oh, and I don't think of eggs as dairy! I am thinking of lactose, I guess. Lots of egg whites in the Eason plan.

I am 43 years old, and found out at age 41 that I am severely lactose intolerate, near 100%. It is so b ad I can't eat yogurt, most cheese, or even those little half and half containers for my coffe. Not ev en milk chocolate - and by the way, they ADD powdered lactose to that.

This makes me SO sad because I love dairy. However, turned out I had been sick EVERY DAY for years, and was so used to it I didn't even notice. after 48 hours of cutting out dairy, I felt like I got a stomach transplant. I will never go back. I thought I had IBS and severe acid reflux, and was taking millions of stomach remedies. I had to carry a case full of every stomach remedy known to man when I traveled, and I kept it in my office as well.

Then within 48 hours of cutting out dairy, every one of my stomach problems disappeared completely. I have not taken a prilosec, zantac, tums, pepto bismol, gas-x, etc, in over a year. Not a single one, and it used to b e that I would not leave the house without them.

In terms of weight, I have seen no change at all. In terms of quality of life, it has been night and day.

I haven't cut it out, but I have cut WAY back over the last 15 months. In general, I don't really miss having less of it.....except for ice cream.

Except for ethical (treatment of animals) or allergy/intolerance reasons, why would you cut out dairy?

Why does she need a reason? And if she has a reason why does it have to be one of those?

I mean, what's supposed to be wrong with eating dairy. I jut don't understand why you would just decide to cut it out.

The main reasons for going vegan are ethical and/or environmental (aside from being bad for animals, the meat and dairy industries are terrible for the environment, and they contribute to food shortages worldwide). But it's a personal decision, and obviously health issues play a role.

Anyway, I went vegan this summer, and I lost about 15 pounds within the first few months. Since then, I've been doing better. It's hard to tell, though, as there are a lot of factors that could account for a change.

Yeh, I know. The milk industry is pretty brutal. I drink a lot of soya milk myself, but am not as strict as I should be with other produce. I choose organic yogurt whenever I can, but am really lax on cheese. I agree with what you're saying on food shortages as well. though.

Another reason for not eating dairy would be that you just don't like the taste of course.

But yes, generally, I was just trying to work out what makes people not want to eat dairy, what the myths and facts were.

LOL  Especially because it is over farmed to feed livestock.

I don't know why I am arguing this. I drink soya milk for its health benefits. I try to stick organic dairy because of the way cows and their offspring are treated. I fail sometimes because being completely ethical would require living in a self-sustaining commune somewhere.

All i wanted to know was why people think a dairy free diet will help them lose weight and seem to have ended up arguing both for including dairy in your diet and excluding it. :ohwell:
