Anyone here do Yoga?

I used to be an avid runner but it is just too hard on my old knees. I like to walk but because of a high school injury (broke my right leg through the growth plate) my right leg is 1 1/2 inches shorter than my left and if I walk too much I have problems with my back and hips. I took up yoga many years ago at the insistence of my wife. Best decision I ever made. I've been bad about my practice the last couple of years and am getting back into it. I do a vinyasa style called Ashtanga. It's the most challenging workout I've ever done. The routine I do takes about 45 minutes and when I'm done I am spent, dripping with sweat but feel great. It is the best exercise I've ever found. It makes you strong, flexible, and provides a great cardio workout. I use some DVD and old VHS tapes that I've collected over the years. My favorite are by a guy named Brian Kest. He talks incessantly and some of the stuff he says used to make me laugh so hard it interfered with my practice ("it's not what you do that matters but, rather, how you do what you do") but I've sort of learned to tune him out. I know the routines by heart and sometimes I do them without the tapes.

Anyone here do yoga? Any tapes or DVDs that you recommend? I also use the David Swenson Short Forms DVD.

  • I've always been interested in yoga...did it for about 2 months last fall but the place I used to go closed :(

Once I figure out my financial situation, there's a place I want to check out and I will hopefully get back into it

I used to roll my eyes when my wife told me I should do it. The first time I did it (a 30 minute routine), I almost died of exhaustion. I've gone to a yoga place a couple of times but it got sort of pricey and after you learn proper form, it's so much more convenient and affordable to do your practice at home. When I was doing it 4 times a weeks I didn't have an ache or pain anywhere. Definitely time to get back into to it. It's so much easier to do when you've lost some weight. I hate having to move my belly out of the way to get into a pose. LOL.
  • I just joined a local gym and they offer 2 or 3 different types of yoga classes weekly and they are included in my $20/mo membership! Check out some gyms, you could get some great yoga classes for little to no additional fee!

    Good luck!
  • I agree that it is a fantastic workout...after doing it for a month 2-3 times a week, I was as sore as if I were lifting heavy weights, etc...but it was a good sore haha.

I have been using Jillian Michaels Yoga Meltdown. Your post sounded so familiar because my husband is a runner and I have always encouraged him to give yoga a try. Well this past weekend he did Yoga Meltdown. When he was finished he said that I might want to buy a new yoga mat because he sweat puddles on mine! Of course he cleaned it well but I took his advice anyway because even though we have been married almost 30 years, yoga sweat remains a personal thing. He said he will continue which I think is great. I hope you and he both enjoy your future yoga practice.

I like the Athlete's Guide to Yoga DVD as you can follow a set program or pick and select which poses you want to do (won't get bored if you switch it up every time) and the DVD will take you through your own routine. I also do classes at the YMCA. I run and found yoga helps me so much.

Yes, I use the Kest workouts, too. They're certainly tough!
