Resting Metabolic Rate Test

This morning I had my RMR tested. I was thinking that it would help me to make the best decision about my caloric intake. I am more confused now!!! The test states that I am burning 1973 calories at rest, how is this possible???? Than the tester told me that I should be taking in between 2350-2450 calories a day to include daily activites like walking to my car. They also stated that if I eat the 1973 in calories per day I would lose the 30 pounds I am wanting to lose in just 13-16 weeks. To me this sounds like a resipe to gain weight. Right now I am eating aprox. 1300 calories per day (and eating back excersize calories100-200). The paper they gave me tells me that I should be medically supervised if I am eating less than 1579 calories per day. Wow this was confusing and disapointing I was really hoping that it would help.

I don't know your stats but that sounds pretty accurate to me. I'm fairly small (5'5.5" and 123lbs) and my BMR is about 1300. I need to eat around 2300 a day to maintain my weight given my activity level. I'm striving to eat 1800-1900 a day and still should lose about 1/2-1lb a week doing that.0

Trust your doctor but google “harris benedict formula”
Try that calculation - it uses BMR (not exactly RMR, but close).
For example,
I am at 182 lbs, 5’-5.5” = 1585.35 BMR (basal Metabolic rate)
Multiply by 1.55 (moderately active 3-5 times a week) = 2457.29 calories to maintain my current weight
Subtract 1,000 calories (because I want to lose 2 lbs a week) = 1457.29 calories to lose 2lbs a week.
I'm not in ANY WAY a doctor nor have I ever had any official metabolic test run on me, but this seems to be working for me.
I'd be curious to how these numbers line up with what your doctor said.0 -
I thought I would post an update. I work for the University of Utah's School of Medicine and spoke to a Dr. in my office who specializes in obesity. She stated that it sounds normaly for how tall I am. She suggested that I take in 1500 calories per day and not eat back my excersize calories. The most important suggestion she gave me was to stay consistant with this amount for more than 6 weeks. Beccause I have yo yoed for so long it will take time for by body to adjust. As long as I do not gain weight she told me to stick to it!! This was helpful, funny I didnt believe it until I spoke to someone I know, respect, and trust!!!0

Hi:
Do not be discouraged. I just saw your post. I am a male: weighed 255, 6'2. My RMR was 1980 calories. My daughter, an exercise physiologist, recommended 2200 calories per day. Now, 30 pounds and one year later, it works.
I do account for exercise calories, but would do probably better if I didn't. I would and could loose another 15 pounds.
Good luck.0 -

I'm guessing they used equipment like a BodyGem or something similar. These have certain requirements in order to be accurate - for example, the user should be in a completely relaxed state, with no exercise, meals, coffee, etc within 3 hours before, or whatever the time period they specify. If you ran up the stairs 15 minutes earlier, for example, that can throw off the results and make you appear a lot "hotter" than you really are.0
