Is there a proper way to start a diet?

I was always wondering if there is a proper way to start a diet? I hear so much about cleansing your system of the old and in with the new, but not much on how to start. I have restricted my salt and fat intakes and increased my water intake over time and I dont know if this is the way to do it. Im a newbie when it comes to diets, since I yo-yo a lot in my weight. I have always had problems with my weight since I was 16 years old. I would gain 5 then lose 10 then gain back 15. Now I am at a weight I am NOT happy with and I started here to get motivation and also try to change my eating habits. < I'm a emotional eater> any help would be appreciated.

Nah, just stop eating as much
Seriously, don't over complicate things, at least to start. Just get on with it.0 -
I started my diet with FINALLY recording what I ate accurately. I used to think this and that there wasn't adding up to much.
After I realized what I was eating and how much, then I looked for alternatives.0
