Posting Recipes

Alright, I am gonna throw this out there....and I may take some flack for it, but I am gonna say it anyway.
Recently there have been complaints coming up about all the recipes being posted (which I post a ton) and the "value" of the recipes being put up.
Here's the thing, you don't HAVE to go look at the recipes if you lack the "self-control" to deal with em. You don't HAVE to cook what is posted. I totally get that this is a "weight-loss" site and that posting healthier recipes is what we are going for. The thing is... these recipes ARE the healthier versions of most foods! It ISN'T off the wall to be having a meal recipe that costs 400 calories or a dessert that costs 300 calories! Traditionally, many foods are double that... especially desserts.
I don't know about you, but I am not the type of person who will be able to spend the next 70+years eating lettuce, fruit salad, and chicken breasts. If you are one of those who can, that is awesome and I totally applaud you. I am not one of you though. I am not going to play a passive roll at family parties cause I am not able to eat dessert (or sometimes ANYTHING at all) because they are all high in calories/fat/etc... I am gonna whip out my little recipe collection and find something that is healthier and bring it!
The recipe collection here is to give ideas. I know how to make a healthy chicken breast and salad.... What I and others may not know is HOW to make a healthier cheesecake, casserole, soup, etc. THAT'S what the recipe section is for... to inspire and give ideas. Not to beat a dead horse. I don't know what I would have done if someone hadn't posted the Sweet Potato Fry recipe or the Turkey Salisbury Steak recipe! Those are amazing, and things I would of never tried.
I don't cook all the stuff I post (I do research it though). I collect... because I know there will come a time I will NEED to bring a dessert (Easter anyone...) and I WON'T make something that I can't eat.
I do know though, that when I get bored with my food I quit. I've ate chicken, lettuce, celery, asparagus, fish, etc for months at a time (those foods are all great, but one can get tired of them).... then stopped and gained everything back cause all the foods I "couldn't" eat were an option now. The way I am looking at it this time around.... Yes, I am eating to live....but by damn I am still gonna find a little enjoyment out of the food I am creating and eating. It doesn't mean eating the WHOLE lower calorie version cheesecake, it means having a portion... KNOWING that tomorrow... if I have the calories for it I can have another piece if I WANT to.
Anyway, that's my 2-cents on the deal. I post recipes cause I have a lot collected and I LIKE supporting others in their journey and giving them options. I can't offer outstanding exercise tips or motivational stories.... but sharing my recipes (not ALL of which do I tweak into "diet" mode...cause you can do that yourself if you choose) is a service I CAN offer... and I do look really closely at the Nutrition information given and weigh whether it is a recipe of value.
Food is not the enemy...

I hope that you aren't getting too much flack for your recipes. We all need to look at this a lifestyle change. There will be times when you are going to a friend's place or seeing family when it is up to you to take some food. Not everybody wants to eat celery.
To have a wide variety of lower calorie / healthier recipes to choose from makes a lot of sense.
Thanks for your contributions0 -
I enjoy your recipes and even have a few that you have posted. I agree with you that sometimes like family dinners you need to have a dish (dessert) to bring along and it is nice to have a healthier choices.
Thanks for all you do!!!!!0 -
I tend to be dessert heavy, since that's usually what I am asked to bring.
I have been researching more main dish type recipes though... Can't live on dessert alone! :laugh:0 -
Recipes are posted from other members as a means of sharing. I don't think that all healthy is necessary.
Treat recipes are fine with me, take them or leave them! NO one is going to come to your house and force you to make cookies or tarts or whatever. If you don't find the recipe has any value to you move on. I can say that some of the "healthy" menus posted are full of crap too! :drinker:0 -
I agree with this topic! I have quit EVERY-SINGLE-TIME I have tried to lose weight for this reason! I was sick of chicken, salads, veggies, and fruit. I WANTED cheesecake, ice cream, steak, fries, etc. As soon as you say to yourself "I'm not going to eat chocolate..." What is the first thing you crave??? It all comes down to diet and exercise. You CAN have certain things, you just have to allow for it. That is what I never realized before, and why I fell of the boat every single time. Thank you for posting!0

I appreciate the recipes you post. Like you, I'm always looking for a healthier version of a desert that doesn't consume my entire calorie allotment for the day. I attend alot of work functions that require a dish to pass and it's good to know I can still contribute something yummy0
-
not sure what the complaints are about....I love all the recipe ideas....keep em coming!0
-
I thank you for the recipes as I too get tired of the things that we usually eat. :frown: So something different is great.:drinker: I have tried a few of these and my husband say's I would love to have that again. We do enjoy them and one's I don't think we would like I go on and look for more that I would like to try. So thank you for your time and effort to share with us.:flowerforyou:0
-
That's what i am talkin about...
I do the whole chicken, fish, veggie thing a lot....but every now and then you just want something different... that won't break the calorie bank! Hopefully, through mine and others recipe posts enough options are out there for people!0 -
POST EM...you get any flack you let me know by golly0
-
I, personally, enjoy your recipes and thank you for posting them:flowerforyou:0
-
I love the variety your recipies provide.
I guess as someone who has had to live with severely restrictive diets in the past ( due to health) I am used to reading recipies and then substituting anyways ..shrug. I cant expect everyone to change lol. or not post because it would make me feel bad. Your doing fine. Please keep posting.0 -
I will confess, I do get frustrated cause i do end up posting a ton.... and it bumps a bunch down the line that others post and that i haven't tried and then I forget and then end up trying to search for them.
I am crossing my fingers that some recipe feature is developed to organize/manage them a bit better.

Thanks for posting your recipes! Seems like MFP'ers are becoming a little to out spoken in a negative way & becoming quite cruel & unecessary!!! It's starting to become very discouraging seeing what people are posting and beginning to question if this is the place I want to complete and share my journey.
I think you said what you needed to perfectly. I love showing my friends and family the small changes they can make in their everyday meals that make a HUGE difference. Just yesterday, my boyfriend and I were out shopping and craving a hot chocolate. I showed him how ordering one size smaller, having it made with skim milk and skipping the whip cream can make a massive difference in calories. Keep posting, there will never be a 100 calorie lasagna or other comfort food that are everyday favorites, and I think you're recipes are realistic for after we take off all the weight & have our get togethers and whatnot.
Keep up your great work!0 -
Thanks for the receipes! I am pretty new still, so I haven't yet grown tired of chicken and salad, however I KNOW that day is coming. And, like everyone else, I have thrown up my hands in the past and ordered a pizza and then ITS ON!
For some of us, this is a critical component to success. For others, well, don't save the recipes!!! I look at the posts about the 30 day shred and PX90 and well, they don't apply to me at this point in my journey. But I would never presume to say, hey you already fit bozos, step aside! :noway: :noway:
We all have to learn our own path, and that means honoring that not every path is like mine. So, again, thanks for the receipes!0 -

I agree, those who have certain ways they are eating for their success (like Shred and P90X) are amazing. I wish I had that kind of dedication and focus. Sadly, I do not at this time (at one time I did...haven't found it again). My family are a bunch of dieters...I've done it all since I was a teen....I want to show them that eating "healthier" isn't as complicated as they think and that it's not boring.
Again, I am amazed by those I see who are following certain eating plans. I hope someday to be a bit closer to that. They blow me away, in a good way.

Totally agree, with all of the above. Food is not the enemy, and while white sugar and white flour isin't exactly a nutritional powerhouse, treating it like the enemy will turn it into just that, the enemy. I still practice moderation, in everything I do, and if I feel like a piece of candy or cheesecake just because I feel like it, I fit it in - always trying to make it as "healthy" as possible. Food isin't just nourishment..Keep the recipes coming ChubbyBunny!!0 -
Ohhhh I LOVE whole wheat... I have tried baking with it... with mixed results.
I find if I post a recipe as close to the original as possible... I leave it in the hands of the persons hands what additional changes they would like. On occasion I'll put little notes at the end or tips.
One person may like a reduced fat cheesecake.... but someone else may gag on it and would have wanted to make it more traditional.... I hope that comes across when I post them. I like people to have some freedom to play with stuff.0 -
Well if you were referring to my post then I am sorry you are offended. I tried to be polite about.
I thought some good suggestions came out of it though. I also said recipes have their place on MFP but it is pretty damn difficult to come on MFP and there in the thread topics list is food titles staring you in the face. Its like watching TV at night and all the commercials are food commercials.
I think a recipe section would be a great benefit to MFP. We even post unhealthy recipes on their, we still have families to feed.0 -

I wasn't overly offended, there were some good suggestions that did come up.
The thing is, there IS a recipe section (even if it's not practical at the moment), it's what we've got.
I am not gonna stop posting recipes cause some can't handle looking at recipes. You don't HAVE to look at them. It's like the topics that some find offensive... the stance is... if you don't like it don't read it.
I do get where you are coming from though, I get annoyed when it fills the "Recent Forum Topics" box on the main page...but as of now...that is the only way to snag interest in them and give them some exposure...since there isn't a more practical way to display them.
But I stillyou BEFORE!

I love the recipes! Keep 'em comin', girl!! I've gotten lots of great ideas and meal plans from looking through the recipes. :flowerforyou:0
