Home made bread anyone?

Just curious if anyone else out there makes their own bread? I've been trying to get away from processed foods and trying to eat clean.........keyword TRYING!

Anyways, I just added my recipe for home made bread and I'm kinda schocked. I can get about 10 slices (sometimes more) out of a loaf.....my calories per slice is only 45. There is like 90 calories in a regular slice of bread!

so just wondering if anyone else that makes bread has a similiar calorie count?

PS I make mine with water and honey, not milk and sugar.

    Have you weighed your bread? I am wheat free and make my bread out of spelt. I measure by the weight. One ounce is about 80 calories. That is a very thin slice of my bread. Always depends on the size of the loaf of bread how many slices you are getting, so might be a good idea to try to weigh. I also use water for mine.

    even if I weigh, the recipe option calculates by how many people the recipe serves....so I entered how many slices I get, 10. so it takes all the calories in the recipe (one loaf) and divides it by how many "people" it serves/slices, this giving me the average per slice. I know when i cut the bread its not always the same size slice, but I'm trying to approiximate my portions.....I'm too lazy to weigh everything, lol. It just doesn't work for me.

    How many calories do you get per slice with your bread?

    I bake a fair amount & my breads are fairly 'pure' - that is, flour, yeast, water mostly - sometimes I'll add Olive Oil for some breads, or honey for others, or a little of this or that, but at the core it's just flour, yeast & water. Sometimes it's just flour & water (true sourdough), but unless you keep a starter going, it takes a week just to get a loaf out of it.

    My pizza dough recipe makes a 12" pizza for about 600 calories or so, so only about 75 calories per slice (before toppings).

    I hadn't taken the time yet to figure out what a loaf or slice is compared to commercial breads though. I should probably do that.

    As a side note, I don't use a bread machine - I prefer a more rustic bread. My Kitchen Aid stand mixer is the preferred tool and I usually just make round or stretched (baguette) loaves.

    Have you read The Village Baker by Joe Ortiz? (I might have the name wrong, but it's something like that) Really good book on the science of bread making.
  • When I am not dieting I like to make my own bread. I am interested in your recipe as I think mine is much more caloric.

    LMAO!!!!!!!! I read your post and went to my recipe...LMAO I had 3 servings of "1/4 cup of flour" instead of 3 cups! (I'm still giggling). I must have scaned the size option, but didn't click on 1 cup, so when I put in 3 for serving size....it said 3/4 cup of flour!

    I was thinking WOW all these years I thought home made bread was more, man Thank you sooooo much for asking about the recipe!
    i would be gaining weight like CRAZY...and wondering WTF?

    Oh well, I might not be good at entering recipies, but I'm good for a laugh!

    I use my Kitchen aide tooo, love it! use to use the bread machine and still do (sometimes) just find the bread to be heavier.

    Yeah I've baked a good amount of bread in my time but not when I was tracking my calories. Too often I'd end up polishing off a good portion of it straight out of the oven.

    With butter. And jam. Or honey. Or dipped in soup...


    Now I want bread.
