New-ish; and trying to figure out how to jump start the weig

I've used MFP in the past, but just as a mobile app. I've never posted on the message boards, but figure it might be of some help. I really like the variety of entries available in the food log, but I am trying to figure out how to jump start my weight loss. I finished chemotherapy about 3 months ago, and during that time the medicine (steroids) that I was on made me gain a lot of weight. I went from about 178 to a current 222. I am currently beginning going to the gym again, about three to four days a week between two jobs. But I want to make sure that I am doing it properly so that I see results! In the past I've been on a diet and exercise regimen and not really seen much results.

Any ideas to make sure I am successful??
