If you are running or doing anything where your feet are moving a lot, you NEED to buy your shoes 1/2 to 1 full size larger than your "street" shoes. You can damage your nail beds(read actually LOSE toenails)if your feet are constantly butting up against your shoes' interiors. Go buy new shoes NOW!

Excellent advice, and I'll add a little comment, DON'T buy cheap shoes, buy the best you can afford, especially if you are doing a lot of walking and/or running.
  • I agree. Even if you aren't a runner, you might consider going into a running store and being fitted for shoes. I'm flat footed and overpronate and have to wear a motion control shoe. After years of Saucony I switched to Brooks and haven't looked back.

    Also, I wear a size 9.5 sneaker and in heels I'm only an 8 - 8.5.

If I am using my machine at home, I go barefoot. lol Probably not the best advice since it offers no support, but I have the same issues with my toes getting all smushed when I workout.

I have to agree with the above posters (except running barefoot). It makes a HUGE difference getting fit properly at a running store and going up a size. They can video your walk and run, and tell you what your foot is doing and thus what type of shoe technology you need. I have to have inserts for proper arch support, yet I overpronate. When I forget (leave them in another shoe) to wear them, I get shin splints or calf pain, and my knees get tight. Get ya some new shoes girlfriend!

You can also lookup different ways to tie your laces that will help stabilize the ankle area, without over tightening the laces across the top of your foot. I find my toes go numb if the laces are tight. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGZ0cQ5cwQ8
