I've just started strength training. I've based my program on the many books I've been reading and Every book I've read has said to do between 8-12 reps for about 3 sets, then move on..
Now my spouse, who used to workout/lift weights regularily (although doesn't anymore) has said I should be doing a relatively easy weight and going for as long as I can to "build lean muscle" *quote*
Is this true? I am under the impression that in doing that I would be building muscle endurance more than strength.
Honestly, I think he just doesn't want me to "bulk up". I've explained to him I don't produce enough testosterone/other male hormones to bulk up like a man and that that is a myth. But I don't think he believes me lol
So am I doing this right? I'm doing 3 sets of 12, with about 45-60 second rests between sets.. Then moving on!

A few years back, my wife stuggled with not wanting to bulk up by lifting heavy weights. She is now convinced as the experts say it is not possible for a girl to look muscular more than briefly right after a hard workout unless the girl is using steroids. The fact is that girls don't have the same level of testosterone as guys. She would recommend you pick up copies of Oxycen magagazine for good routines for woman because you do have different bodies. Lifting heavy weights will make you look a lot better and make you stronger doing everything else you do in life. Good luck!

"doing a relatively easy weight and going for as long as I can" -That would be cardio..

I suggest reading New Rules of Lifting for Women. Also, its my opinion that most magazine training programs are written to sell magazines which is why I recomend avoiding them.
