slow jog= 5 mph -at this pace, a mile takes about 12-13 min.

    that's all I can add:blushing:

I will get faster and then I will know more.

I use the nike plus system to track my runs now, but before I did that I would use my car, just set the mileage at zero and then drive the route that you run then you will know how far it was! Good luck on your running :)

  • If you think that you are going to stay with running outside I would recommend one of the Garmins. I have one with the GPS and it tracks where I go, the speed and the distance. You can even plug it into your computer at the end of the workout and it automatically records all of the info from that workout. If you are looking for something less expensive I would invest in a pedometer - this will show you the number of steps you took ... you could then estimate the distance (i.e. a mile = 5280 feet - granted one step is more than a foot but you could measure your stride).

Rebcolorado's suggestion is great, but if you don't want to go that high-tech yet and save some money....

A heart Heart rate monitor will do wonders.

    1. It will make sure you are not running to fast or slow.
    2. It will also give you an approximation of calories burned.

I really like my polar fitness F4.
  • Good suggestion!

I have the Polar F6 and love it too!

I have a Garmin but if you are a beginner I don't know if you want to spend money on something like that right now. Why don't you just run out a distance for 10 min and then run back to where you started. Keep doing this at the same place and see how your distance increases. You could always measure it with your car later.

A beginner pace is usually about 5 miles an hour which would get you almost 2 miles in your 20 minutes (24 would be 2 on the dot).
