I had back surgery (replaced 2 disc in lumbar) on Dec 27,2008. I am doing great, but I really can not exercise. I am walking 2 miles a day, but it is slow. I can not bend, lift anything over 10 lbs., sit for more than 20 minutes, or swat. I was wondering if anyone else had any ideas on anything else I could do. I am very limited to what the doctor says I can do, but he said I needed to lose some weight. Any sugestions will be wonderful. Thanks

can you go swim at a pool? Water aerobics? water walking? what about a slow eliptical? I guess I don't know if you have access to any of that or not.
  • agree with the water exercise. great without any impact to your joints... check with doctor first.
the YMCA or YWCA usually offers low-cost water walking or water aerobics.

    good luck.

If your Dr. okays it I would suggest walking uphill (or treadmill incline). That will burn quite a few more calories than walking on a level surface. Also, you might want to carry some 2.5 hand weights in each hand...again, if your Dr. approves.
  • Thank ya'll for the suggestions. I never thought about swimming, or carrying some weights. We have a gym at the hospital that has a pool in it. I'm going to call my doctor and see what he says about that. :flowerforyou:
