Does anyone else get underwear burn during exercise?

Everytime I workout on my elliptical I get underwear burn. (where the fabric is around my thighs) It hurts the inside of my thighs so bad after a few days that I have to stop and heal. I weigh 338 and I know there is suppose to be some rubbing but does anyone else experience this? Please don't be cruel.

I run, and there are definitely some underwear that are more comfortable than others. How about trying a different style, like the "boy shorts" that are a bit longer and don't have the elastic around the upper leg? Or wear a pair of compression shorts under your workout shorts or pants instead of underwear? That would eliminate the elastic which is probably what is causing the trouble. Good luck! :flowerforyou:

That sounds uncomfortable. I dont normally wear underwear underneath my workout pants, it's just more comfortable for me that way. Nothing sucks more than having your underwear ride up on you during a class. LOL

Underwear rubbing happened to me even when I wasn't working out. I got some of the no-line style ones to wear because the edges are smooth and don't have lining, plus the fabric is really soft too! Also, boyshorts. Yes, they are awesome for working out in!

They make stuff that helps with the chaffing. You can buy it at many of the big name sporting goods stores. I used it on my inner thighs when I ran a marathon and it works pretty well. Another option is to not wear any. I know that sounds gross but I go commando and then just wash my workout clothes more often. Powder may work too. Good luck. Keep up the good work and you will reach your goal.

Hey sweetie; I am hoping that no one would be so cruel as to say anything about your question!

My Aunt is around your size. She wears the exercise shorts (I think Danskin) sans underwear. Keeps everything where it should be and no uncomfortable rubbing. Maybe that could help? And try Desitin for the afflicted area... might work.
  • Not being rude, but I VERY rarely wear underwear when exercising. Other than a bloody good bra :P

When I was bigger it didn't occur to me to simply NOT wear it, and then a much larger friend mentioned she regularly went commando (sorry if this language offends, it's not meant to!) and since I first tried it, I'm a convert! Now I'm smaller (still around 175lbs, so not slim), I don't know how I EVER put up with uncomfy pants. Honest, whip 'em off, go without, and I bet you'll be a convert too - knickers are way over rated!

Commando most of the time. Panty lines make me uncomfortable. :embarassed:
  • Bodyglide.

it got me through Special forces selection, it has got me through marathons and ultraruns. I was a serious chafer, i tried every type of underwear and sports garment there was.

A slide of this on my inner thighs and on my nipples and i can run all day long wrapped in sandpaper without chafing.

I use the guys one but i posted a link to the female one, cant see too much of a difference.

    cheers

I've had the same problem on the exercise bike. I wear bike shorts without undies. That seems to take care of the problem. Woman Within and Walmart online have some in the $15 to $20 range that last well. I've had mine for years and they are still nice.
    Good luck!

I don't wear it when I work out. My running shorts have a liner that kind of serves that purpose. My capris don't have the liner, but I don't seem to need underwear with those, either.

Maybe try going commando if you can. Either way, I'm sure as you lose, it will get better.

Also, you can try I think it's called Glide? Runners use it to prevent chafing. And there's also moleskin, but that might be tricky in that particular area.

My workout shirt rubs my nipples raw when I run, I thought I was the only one.
  • Ever try going commando? I've never thought of purchasing underwear just for exercising but i suppose you could shop it around and test some out. I go right to the gym from work so that's too much fuss for me. Just make sure your pants aren't see through!

The spankex shorts will help, just wear them under your work out pants.

Try a pair of spandex shorts underneath your workout clothing instead of underwear.
  • Thank you everyone for your suggestions! Its just nice to know I'm not the only one who goes through these things!!

I saw this post last week and didn't respond because it hadn't happened to me. A couple of days later it did happen. It happened when I wore my boy short undies. Never happened with my others. Owie.
